Vehicle Detail
After 20+ years of ownership by a long-time Volvo enthusiast, I am selling my 1985 740 turbo sedan. With a build date of 12/84 this nearly 29 year old 740 turbo sedan is in excellent condition. The car has been continuously garaged and has not seen winter in 19 years; you can tell that this car has been pampered. It was entered in the the 2012 Volvo Club of America National meet and placed second in the competitive 7 and 9 series class; losing out to a time-capsule 780 Coupe with only 30,000 miles. As you can see by the modification list and the pictures included in the listing, this car is in great shape and is cleanly modified with a European look. With some engine enhancements intended to help it "breathe" better it will no doubt surprise some domestic V8's. I have not "beaten" on this car, but have taken it to the drag strip a few times, with my best run being a 13.8 seconds @ 100.5mph. Furthermore, after throwing the iPd catalog at the suspension, it has the handling to match the increased power. This car gets looks and compliments everywhere I go, people love seeing a classic Volvos cleanly modified. A quick search of the the various used car marketplaces on the Internet will show you that there are very few Volvo 740s in this shape, let-alone maintained and modified like this one. Upgrades and modifications include: Engine -iPd turbo cam -ported head w/ multi angle valve job -port-matched intake manifold -ported 90+ exhaust manifold -mandrel bent 3" downpipe joined to a 2.5" TME stainless catback -large intercooler out of an Isuzu NPR box truck -K&N cone filter -940 electronic fan conversion -Porsche cbv -manual boost controller, currently running ~14lbs -fresh 36lb/hr fuel injectors -upgraded fuel-side wiring harness Suspension -Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks and struts -iPd/TME sport springs -iPd adjustable panhard bar -iPd sway bars -iPd/TME strut tower brace -Cherry Turbos lower chassis brace -960 subframe braces Cosmetic/misc -17" BMW e36 "Style 5", two piece wheels manufactured by BBS (NOS when installed) -Motorsports Tech 5x108 to 5x120 wheel adapters -nearly new 225/55/17 Continental ExtremeContact DW tires -LHD European headlights in excellent shape -OEM sidemarker lights -very rare OEM add-on front "splitters", NOS when installed -960/S90 door handles -M5 style trunk lip spoiler -1990 and newer 740 taillights -eggcrate grill (originally came with a vertical slat grill) -upgraded audio system with aux input -VDO boost gauge in iPd a-pillar pod -Grant GT steering wheel As you can see, cosmetically this car is in superb shape. Mechanically it is very solid with many low mileage parts and in need of very little sorting needed. A/C is currently inoperable, but everything is in place. OD hesitates to engage sometimes, a common problem with the electronic overdrives on Volvo manual transmissions of this era. After swapping 1990+ taillights, the bulb out light is on and the backup lights do not work; all other lights work fine. Few very small dings, paint shines up nicely but is not perfect. The dash has a few small cracks, but is in excellent shape. It does have a small amount of localized rust. As to be expected of a nearly 30 year old car the engine has some small leaks, but is very reliable and drives out very nicely. Feel free to ask questions, and I'll be glad to answer any inquiries about its condition. On Oct-07-13 at 08:39:12 PDT, seller added the following information: *ADDED 10/07/13* I wanted to include a couple more details about the engine/transmission. I was asked if it had the original b230ft engine, which it does. It it still running Bosch LH 2.2 fuel management, although it has an ECU out of a 87 740 turbo with a custom chip. The chip allows for a small amount of fuel enrichment for safer air/fuel ratios, since the boost has been raised to 14psi. The EZK ignition system is unchanged. I also want to note that a slightly stouter, iron-case m46 manual transmission was swapped in some time ago in place of the aluminum-case m46 that was originally in the car. I will continue to update the listing if I remember anything significant that a buyer may be interested in. On Oct-10-13 at 14:33:30 PDT, seller added the following information: In order to further help interested parties get an idea of what they're bidding on, I have uploaded a walk-around video to youtube which can be seen below. One note, the connectors I used in the engine compartment are Weather Pack connectors, not World Pac as I incorrectly referred to them in the video. On Oct-11-13 at 16:55:27 PDT, seller added the following information: I do have a timing belt cover that can be easily installed. The original one was broken and was taken off when I put on a new timing belt and water pump on the car a couple years ago. I will also include with the car some miscellaneous trim and interior parts as well as the stock headlights, steering wheel and intercooler. On Oct-14-13 at 07:34:40 PDT, seller added the following information: I have plenty of other parts that the new owner might be interested in purchasing after the auction has ended. My main concern is in selling the car, so I was hesitant to mention all of the items I have available in the car's ebay listing. Some other items available include: -’94 B230ft block out of a clean 940T with 116k miles (this "L series" engine has a sturdier bottom end that includes 13mm "M" rods, larger main bearings and piston oil squirters among other improvements from the early B230's) -G80 locker (with axles) out of the same 940T -gasket and seal kit to freshen the engine up -new Febi-Bilstein HD oil pump -new OEM clutch kit …as well as a small parts hoard that the new owner can look through. Again, these items are not part of the ebay sale, but can be bought by the new owner of the car in a separate transaction after the auction has ended. I'm hoping the availability of these additional parts may sweeten the deal for an enthusiast looking to buy the car.
