Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is my very early 1962 Triumph TR4 unmolested survivor. This wire wheel car was built in January 1962 and is one of the first 4,000 cars built in the first 6 months of TR4 production (commission # CT3992L; Body # 4606CT). This TR4 is a matching numbers car with its original factory engine and 4 speed gearbox (non-overdrive unit). Odometer reads 6,409 miles. I purchased this car from an estate sale in California after it was pulled out of a garage from 30 years of dry storage. The Blue California license plates are original to the car and were last registered in February 1984 before the last owner passed away. It is in amazingly rust free condition. The car comes with a very rare period (Dura Plastic) hardtop, original jack, spare tire, workshop manual, spare parts and a file of parts invoices, parts catalogs and magazines. Overall Condition: The car is currently registered in New York State and garaged in Huntington, New York. Overall the TR4 is very original except for a white repaint (over Red) and redone seats at some point in time (one in valor the other vinyl). The body panels are straight and rust free along with its solid and rust free floors and frame. The commission # and body tags are all readable and in-tacked including the brass radiator tag. The car starts right up and runs strong but needs a new clutch to be a daily driver. I changed the clutch master cylinder and slave but currently does not disengage. I popped the clutch and take off and she runs fine. Mechanicals: The engine starts right up, runs very strong and does not smoke or have any oil leaks. Oil pressure is strong at 60 psi and revs quickly to 6500 rpms without hesitation. Engine and gearbox are original to the car (engine # CT57239E and head # 511695). The SU carbs have been rebuilt by Apple Hydraulics and the early type intake manifold and air cleaners are correct for this car. Radiator and engine has been flushed and has all new hoses and a new water pump and belt. Engine runs cool with no overheating at all. Need timing adjustment, idle seems a bit high. Valve adjustment was done. The gearbox is the factory standard (non-overdrive) 4 speed unit and all four gears and reverse work well without any noises. Shocks, steering, suspension and brakes are all in working order but the rear brakes need wheel cylinders since they leak a bit. All of the following was serviced to get the car on the road drivable and roadworthy: The following are new parts: · Original SU Carbs were rebuilt (by Apple Hydraulics) · new gas tank · new fuel lines and filters · new fuel pumps (Mechanical and electric) · new water pump · new fan belt · Radiator was flushed and repainted · new radiator hoses and clamps · new thermostat and gasket set · new original type Air cleaners · new fuel and oil filters · new plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, points, condenser · new Interstate battery · Timing was set and valves adjusted to factory spec · New brake master cylinder · New clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder · New carb, intake, exhaust and water pump gaskets Body: The car was painted years ago and is in poor condition. It was painted white over the original Red. The paint is cracking in some spots and dulling in others. It has its share of scratches and touch ups as well. There are really no dents to speak of and the doors close tight and straight. All body panels are original to the car. The doors, engine hood (with rare short bubble) and trunk are all 100% rust free, solid and as straight as an arrow. The door gaps are perfect along with rust free door jams, floors, inner and outer sills, wheel wells and frame. The underneath looks like it’s a 10 year old car - unbelievably rust free!!!. Glass is in good condition; rubber around windshield is cracked and needs to be replaced. All chrome is original to the car. Interior: The dash is 100% original. This early TR4 has the rarely seen aluminum dash center with all correct working gauges, button and knobs. The white painted dash is correct. Dash pad, knee pads and door panels are in really good original condition. Windows operate and doors lock and operate well. Carpets might have been replaced but are in nice condition. Seats were reupholstered, are mismatched but contain the original seat frames and cushions. New seat covers are $300. I do not have the convertible top or bows but they can found on ebay or at Moss motors. The hard top is a very rare period aftermarket hardtop made by Parish Plastics and is in very good condition and fits really well. The steering wheel is a Le Carrera wheel which is a nice upgrade if you enjoy driving the car. The original steering wheel and horn button has been retained for originality. Conclusion: This TR4 is a great candidate for a high standard concourse restoration or just can be used as a daily driver as is. The car is completely rust free and is as honest unmolested a car as you will find. With little effort and money it will be worth north of $25K. The car is sold “AS IS” with no expressed or implied warrantee or guarantees. I am not a broker so this is a private sale that is final. It is sold “WHERE IS” in Huntington, New York and if transported will be the cost of the buyer. I have set a reasonable reserve on the car. Hagerty Insurance Co has valued my TR4 at $15,000 in its present condition. Triumph TR4’s are getting very hard to find in unrestored rust free condition like this car and are getting very sought after by collectors and car enthusiasts. If you are a serious buyer and have any questions please call me at 631-339-3349 or contact me through E-Bay email by asking a question. I will sell to Europe/ worldwide and to anyone who appreciates this car for what it is. I have the right to end this auction early since I will advertise on other venues. I will request a $500 deposit within 48 hours and the balance shortly thereafter and will hold the car for you until payment and transportation has been made. Thanks for your interest. Dave.
