Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Up for auction is a well-preserved and very beautiful 1969 Pontiac Le Mans. This is a no-reserve auction which means high bid takes it. No early termination. No trades. But best of all, no reserve price. If you bid, bid to buy. Verify that you have the funds in hand before committing your bid. What you are looking at here is a prime example of a southern car which spent most of its years in the deep south away from the salty winter roads of the Midwest and the body cancer that results. This car has always been garaged and out of the weather. This is an older restoration from several years ago and is showing some signs of wear normal for its age. The body was repainted in the Pontiac Verdoro Green color option and the vinyl top was replaced about that time. The car shows well at 20 feet but closer inspection reveals some flaws such as a few small paint bubbles, paint scratches and chips, and a tear in the vinyl top towards the back by the rear window. Nevertheless, the car attracts lots of attention with all its striking chrome and stainless steel trim accenting the darker body color. The ’69 Pontiac sported one of the most unusual and unique front fascias of any car on the road at that time. For the purpose of this auction, I have made every effort to represent the car accurately. Remember that photos tend to make the car look better than it does in person. Therefore, please take time to read each item below very carefully before bidding!!!! Positive attributes:Has as an original 1969 Pontiac 350 cubic inch motor that runs very strong. Does not smoke or burn oil. No unusual mechanical noises. Unfortunately, I do not have any history or documentation regarding what has been done to this engine by previous owners. Nonetheless, it performs very well. This engine will out pull a similar Chevy 350 due to is massive stroke. What I have done since owning this car is add a new Edelbrock aluminum intake with a freshly rebuilt Holley 650 spreadbore carburetor. Runs smooth and is a blast to drive out on the interstate. Has a new dual exhaust with simple but great sounding glass-pack mufflers. They are not too loud and sound better than the more expensive FlowMaster exhaust on my Camino. The sound this car makes is authoritative without being harsh.Has a heavy duty Turbohydromatic 400 transmission with a floor shift and console. The 400 shifts good and does not slip. Not totally sure, but I believe the rear axle is a 3.23 non-posi (open) differential. It has a period correct 10 bolt housing. I believe this was a standard axle configuration with this type of car.It has a totally stock Air Conditioning system still running R-12. It is arguably the coldest blowing AC system of all the vintage cars I have ever owned. It works superbly. Has a newer radiator with an add-on polished aftermarket stainless overflow tank added to keep antifreeze off the garage floor. A new water pump was also installed recently. Has power steering. I put on a new GTO steering box shortly after I got the car. Ball joints and tie rod ends are tight. The suspension is tight. The car handles very well and steers straight going down the road.Newer tires with less than 1000 miles on them. Hercules H/P 4000 P235/60 R14s. Wheels are standard 14” Pontiac Rally wheels common on this year of Pontiacs.Has factory power front disk brakes that work well. The rear drums and shoes are new with new wheel cylinders on each side. No warped rotors or wobble when you stop. The brakes work very well.Has factory tilt steering column that is like new.Has factory-style in dash tachometer. No factory gauges, though. The dash plate is new and looks great. Speedometer works like it should and shows 55,400 miles. (Mileage is undocumented.) Fuel gauge works good. All interior lights work as they should including the glove box light. Lighter even works. After I got the car, I installed a RetroSound Model Two in dash stereo head unit. This is a top-of-the-line modern radio that resembles the old original style factory radio. It sounds and performs awesome. This radio is Blue-tooth capable, has MP3/USB ports, IPOD compatible, has pre-amp inputs and subwoofer outputs, remote control and so on. For more information on the Model Two, visit RetroSoundUSA.com.The other tremendous feature of this car is that it has a totally well preserved original dash pad. No cracks. These units are not available via aftermarket suppliers so this is one item you will not have to hunt down and replace. The interior is black. The upholstery is in good shape. No rips. Seat belts are all there in fair shape. Console is in fair shape. New lid. Door panels are in good condition. The headliner is in fantastic shape and looks newer. Carpet is the only interior issue and is worn and needs replaced. The window regulators are the manual type and work well. Overall, the interior is better than most you will find this age. There are no interior rattles going down the road. Very solid body. Also, the doors on this car are unbelievably tight. The first day or so after I got this car, I just went around showing my friends what a real car’s door sounds like when it shuts. Totally unmatched against today’s modern cars. Awesome sound! The other significant feature about this car is that the floor pans and trunk floor are totally solid. No rust holes. This car was undercoated sometime in the past. That probably saved the sheet metal. However, the undercoating is peeling off in a lot of places.Yes, I did have the car appraised by a professional appraiser. I know what it is worth in the regional market. I can fax a copy of the summary page at your request. Now for the “needs help” category: As I said, paint job is an older restoration. There are several small bubbles dime size or less in different places. Body shop said they can be fixed if you want this car to be a car show contender. Valance panel under front bumper has scratches and chips. I would consider the restoration to be good for its day but not 5 stars. However, I would not consider it an amateur job, either. Vinyl top is in pretty good shape overall except for the left rear corner. (See photo.) There is a tear in the vinyl and the adhesive is lifting. Not sure of the extent of damage underneath and what it would take to fix. Underlying surface seems solid, though. Again, to make a show contender, you would want to fix.Windshield has a light wiper streak in the glass. Body shop says it can be buffed out with glass polish.Left rear tail light lens is cracked.Overall, bumper chrome and stainless trim are in good shape. But they are not totally perfect. Some pieces are more weathered than others. Just be aware that the pictures don’t pick up on the surface finish very well. Carpet is worn and ripped. Will definitely need replacing. Small transmission oil leak around the detent shaft seal (shifter select shaft). Easy and inexpensive fix. No other leaks elsewhere, though. Brake master cylinder is wrong for this car’s brake booster. This is what came on the car when I got. What is on it is a later master cylinder not designed for the 1969 booster’s contour. Specifically, the reservoir lid retainer clip interferes with the booster housing. Despite the housing issue, the function of the master cylinder is totally unaffected. The brakes work 100% and are totally reliable. But to be correct, the master cylinder should be replaced with a 1969 style which is readily available and inexpensive. Easy fix.Rally wheel trim rings don’t all match. I think there is one that is a little different style from all the others. Again, easy to correct. Overall, this car has tremendous potential. The car runs and drives unbelievably well as is. There are no body panels that need to be replaced. Actually, this Le Mans would show well just as it is at your local cruise night event. I get lots of interest in this car everywhere I go with it. Needless to say, if you want classic Pontiac styling at half the cost of a comparable GTO, this car will do the job without taking out a second mortgage. Finally, make sure that you have all your questions answered before placing a bid. You are welcomed to see the vehicle by appointment for a personal inspection if this works for you. I have made every effort to honestly describe the condition of this car to the best of my familiarity with the vehicle. I will do my best to answer questions about what I know and for those things that I don’t know, I will say so. Now for the business side of this auction.
