DESERT FIND! 1958 Pontiac Safari Custom This car was once owned by a couple in Littlerock CA, living on the edge of the Mohave desert. Last registered 1979, the original rear California black license plate is banged up but easily restored. The car sat for many years until picked up by a local junkyard circa 2000. I bought it shortly after, upgrading to a large parking space in the garage at home. Intending to rebuild, we had a local shop remove the original 370ci engine 2bbl, 4spd auto powertrain. They agreed to keep the parts for later but we stopped in one day to find out they threw the lot out for scrap – no notice or call as courtesy. We apologize to the future owners for the loss and promise not to allow such misfortune again. Windshield has a small stone crack but is otherwise useable. The driver's door window needs replacement – all other tinted side glass is good. The rear window was broken. A complete upper and lower tailgate was bought for replacement, including extra chrome ribs to replace 2 broken originals. The tail gates are included in the purchase. The interior is pretty much toast from sitting in the sun for decades. The original seat and door materials can provide a guide to matching, but you are starting from scratch There are great miles of stainless trim – all will need a polish. The top swaths are perfect; but a few dings on the sides. The front passenger door stainless is bent out of shape - needs replacement/repair. The left rocker panel and back seat floor has been pushed in several inches – possibly from bottoming out on something. The driver’s door is off kilter a tad – the hinges need to be realigned. The rest of the body is fairly intact with minor surface rust in a few areas where paint has worn. The remote spotlight is in good condition and moves freely. One of the headlights is a T3 – certainly old if not original. The junkyard owner had replaced 2 original 14” rims with off-sizes for some reason. The tires are in bad shape and should not be expected to roll far. The heavy duty trailer hitch is cool but has possibly hit ground – bent the back bumper a bit in the process. While the car sat safe inside waiting for me, I collected all the NOS parts I could find and replacement parts needed. I came up with some very hard to find items – several thousand of dollars worth. Winner of the car auction will be given first right of refusal to purchase a lot of additional parts separately. You are never going to find such loot in one place like this. Your choice - I have other 58 cars and can use many of the parts myself if not sold at cost. Bidders should ask all questions and consider offers before the auction ends.
