So if you've been looking for high-profile bargain-priced vintage iron to enjoy this summer, this is it. To this day, there's still something about a bright red pickup truck that makes folks smile. Whether they're faded and old or bright and show ready like this C10, the bright color on a working-class truck seems to be a delightful study in contrasts. I'm guessing this one didn't spend much time hauling hay out on the back 40 or else the guy in charge of making the bodywork straight spent a lot of late nights reworking everything to get it to look this nice. The fresh two-stage urethane paint has an almost impossible shine and if the lines of the truck weren't interesting enough, there's a splash of white on the trim along the flanks. A white top complete with the chrome trim emphasizing the interesting rear window treatment adds to the period look. All the trim and brightwork has been restored, including the unusual tailgate latches and big, smooth bumpers and the bed, of course, is full of nicely finished timber with stainless steel rub stripes. The guys who put this truck together clearly intended to spend a good deal of time behind the wheel, so everything was upgraded instead of merely restored. The original bench seat wears a handsome reproduction cover that's a lot more luxurious-feeling than the factory-issue vinyl. The most obvious upgrade is that lovely wood-rimmed steering wheel from Grant, but other smart modifications include a pair of auxiliary gauges under the dash, a tilt column, and a neatly installed under-dash A/C unit that uses modern R134a refrigerant. The door panels are a light shade of gray so the interior doesn't go into red overload, and it provides a nice contrast to the extroverted bodywork. Carpets instead of rubber mats help control noise and heat, which you'll probably appreciate while listening to the AM/FM/cassette stereo mounted in the center of the dash. The great thing about vintage trucks is that their spacious engine bays can accommodate just about any powertrain you can imagine. In this truck's case, it's a 350 cubic inch crate motor topped by an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb. Smooth but ready to rock, this engine makes the 50-year-old pickup feel like a teenager again with plenty of torque and a fantastic V8 soundtrack compliments of a new dual exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers. A new radiator was installed when the new crate motor went in, and it drives a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and the original rear end, which hangs on soft-riding coil springs so this truck is hardly the buckboard ride that you expect. A good part of that great ride is due to the front clip from a late-model which includes an independent suspension, power steering, and power front disc brakes. Pretty American Racing Torque Thrust wheels were polished up and installed with 245/70/16 front and 285/60/16 rear Goodyear Eagle radials. Completely transformed from basic hauler to a comfortable, stylish hauler, this Chevy delivers in more than one way. Fun V8 power in a rear-wheel drive package has never been this affordable or this practical.
