At the top of the heap were cars like this 1990 Saleen , which shows a remarkable 13,522 original miles and since the owners (there have only been two) knew how special it is, it is incredibly well-documented and immaculately preserved. If youve been looking for just the right Fox Mustang to put away for posterity, I might humbly suggest this fantastic Saleen. First we will go into a little background with this Fox Saleen. This car was sold new new at North Central Ford in Richardson, TX. The sales manager of the Ford dealership purchased this car originally. He drove the car for a very short time and decided he wanted the next model year coming out. It was then purchased by the 2nd and still current owner with just over 3k miles on the clock. Thats right, this car has only had two owners and theyve both been in Texas. Saleen Mustangs were not cheap, and Steve Saleen knew that his customers were not your average kid looking to go fast on the cheap. As a result, the body kit was designed to be functional as much as stylish, and finish quality was beyond anything Ford could master in their mass-production environment. As a result, the black paint on this Saleen convertible is truly show-quality, with nary a ripple or wave to be found anywhere on its inky surface. The ground-effects and rear spoiler were made from OEM-grade materials and permanently affixed to the LX body, giving it a clean, aggressive look that is recognizable from a quarter-mile away. Saleens were also tasteful, so the graphics were limited to contrasting shadow stripes on the rockers and, of course, the Saleen serial number below the drivers side headlight (this car is #181, if youre wondering). Saleen also gave its owners something special inside. The late Fox Mustang interiors were actually quite well designed and highly functional, so the dash and instruments were left as-is, although this one benefits from a rare Saleen-spec 200 MPH speedometer and it came this way from Saleen when it was ordered. Custom Recaro buckets were outrageously expensive at the time, but they are an integral part of Saleens package and show Saleen emblems in the seat backs. The back seat was upholstered to match and the door panels got matching fabric inserts. Of course, theres the all-important serial number plaque on the center console, along with Steve Saleens signature between the seats. An upgraded Pioneer sound system was optional and landed inside this convertible, and theres a custom short-throw shifter that totally transforms the T5 5-speed manuals feel. Overhead, a black power top stows neatly under a matching black boot, which still has its original storage bag in the trunk. Fords venerable 5.0 liter V8 was left pretty much factory-stock, but when youre the king of the streets already, theres not much point to changing the successful formula. With the Racecraft suspension, the Saleen could still run circles around anything this side of a Porsche 911, and with the oversized SC throttle body, it has right-now throttle response. Saleen added a strut-tower brace, subframe connectors, and a front-cradle brace to stiffen the convertibles chassis in a very noticeable way, which makes the upgraded suspension all the more effective. They also remedied the Fox Mustangs biggest liability with proper 4-wheel disc brakes and 5-lug hubs, which are fitted with arguably the most handsome wheels ever created: the Saleen SSC, which are color-matched and wearing staggered 16-inch Goodyear Eagle GS-C rubber. This desirable black Saleen #181 might be the ultimate Fox-bodied Saleen and its definitely one of the lowest mileage cars in existence. The car is well documented with the original Ford warranty card, owners manual, and also some really cool original Saleen literature. If there was ever an investment-grade late-model Mustang, this is it.
