Vehicle Detail

1973 Alfa Romeo Berlina, $8,000 o.b.o. I just replaced the fuel pump. This always requires a test of the system with a pressure guage, regulating the Spica unit by soldering up a hole and redrilling it to get the correct pressure. Both fuel filters were changed. At the exact same price, the car just got $641.38 removed from what you'll likely have to do on any Alfa you buy that hasn't had this already done to it. So that you know, you can't just swap the fuel pump yourself and expect it to work. Every pump puts out slightly different pressure and requires regulation at the Spica. This car has been my daily driver for years, everything I’ve done to the car has been with the idea I would be keeping it the rest of my life. I’m moving to the Caribbean and I can’t take it with me. If I was coming back, I wouldn’t sell it. I'll be adding pictures shortly with the driver's door interior panel installed. I just replace the fuel pump with a rebuilt one from Alfa Parts. All told, I’m probably in this car $20,000 with what I’ve had done and all the spares and extras I have. I just did a $2,800 valve job and it now has sodium filled exhaust valves, they don’t make them, you can’t buy them, they’re WAY better. The head has Euro cams, all new valve seats, big intake valves and mild porting, all by Norman racing in Berkeley. The injection has a Wes Ingram pump, the car runs very well and is fast. I stayed right behind cars with 200 hp on West Marin drives and have been asked “what did you do to that thing?” 10:1 Motronic pistons, careful assembly and the suspension has been completely gone through with all new stock bushings and adjustable upper A arms. The shocks are Bilstein Sport, they’re wonderful on the street. It had the wrong rear springs when I got it, I put in low mileage, correct Berlina springs. A rebuilt fuel pump from Alfa parts has just been installed on October 9, 2012. The motor mounts are Spruell reinforced. The transmission has Merritt Carden lightened gears and anti-friction coating. With the lightened gears, the synchros will last forever. Most people, even Alfa people, don’t know you can’t buy synchros now. The OEM ones are gone and the aftermarket ones you can buy on eBay are junk, there’s no point even putting them in because you’re going to have to take them right out. Some transmissions won’t even shift gears, with those installed. The LSD has the taller Spider gears and is rebuilt. The brakes have drilled and slotted rotors and stainless brake lines. The car has 5 spoke “star” Campagnolo alloy wheels, I have a complete extra set of Cromodoros that are the correct vintage alloy wheels. The ring gear is 131 teeth and the motor is fitted with the light weight rare earth magnet $500 starter. You can’t put this starter on the car unless you change the ring gear! The standard Berlina ring gear is 130 teeth, this starter is so much better, it’s considered a highly recommended upgrade for cars with the 131 gear. The standard starter is very heavy, doesn’t last as long and can break the transmission bell housing. The entire motor was completely rebuilt about 30,000 miles ago, including new timing chains. A new radiator core was installed at that time along with ALL new hoses. The heater valve was changed recently. The exhaust system was replaced at that time. The body is very straight and rust free with the exception of around the front windshield. It looks to have never had a serious collision. This car does NOT have rust problems! My plan all along was to do a gasket windshield conversion when I painted the car and put in the new headliner that I have. Gasket windshields are available from John Norman’s Alfa Parts among other places. It’s the same as a Giulia Super windshield which is why anyone bothers to make them. The glue in windshields are NOT available, so if you get this one out without breaking it, there is someone somewhere in the Alfa community with one that’s worse who will want to buy it. The body panel between the windshield and the hood is in good condition. I changed the driver’s door, because the original window frame didn’t fit the body opening and was making problems with my bicycle roof rack. It’s straighten-able but I couldn’t find anyone willing to do it, so I put in another door. It fits the opening. You also get the original door. The interior is showing its age but presents well and has no rips or tears. The top of the rear seats has dried out from being in the sun. It has modern Securon 3 point seat belts in the front and Securon 2 point belts in the back. I have the driver’s door interior panel, but not installed. I was having a lock smith work on repairing the original door handle. The dash has an older molded cap on it so the cracks don’t show. It could use new base carpet, I have recently put in new mats. There is a new Re-Originals $200 rubber matt that covers the tail light access. Extras: spare front bumper, spare front bumper guard, rear glass with intact heating element, new rear glass gasket. I have the front trim to do a gasket windshield conversion, I searched for this for more than 5 years, they don’t make them, they’re hard to get and usually a Guilia Super owner will pay more for one than a Berlina owner. I have a correct, new headliner from ReOriginals and many small interior and trim bits that are specific to the Berlina that are hard to find. A full set of Cromodoro wheels. Spare front springs, these are impossible to get. Never cut down stock Berlina front spring to “trackify” your car. Once you realize your mistake, there are NO options to get it back to stock ride height unless you make springs. You can have them made if you have something to copy, but Alfa used 2 different front springs (yes, TWO different part numbers). The original driver’s door. 2 spare dash cores, spare instruments, spare tail light lenses. New 3 season car cover, never used. Most Alfa owners brag about how little they spend on their car. The Porsche and other guys usually brag about how much they spend on their cars! You can certainly find a Berlina for less, but not with these upgrades and spares. I spent close to 10 years getting towed into shops because of all the things they DIDN’T fix, even when I’d asked them to. I’ve rebuilt everything to top standards. If you want a reliable car, come look at this one and make an offer after you’ve driven it. Beware of a cheap car, it will cost you more in the long run if you plan on keeping it. More! This is an excellent car, in need of paint, that has been lavished on by a true Alfa nut. If you want a beater, this isn’t the car. If you’re looking for one worth doing the paint and interior, this is it. Come look at it, we’ll go for a drive. We’ll talk. It's just had $3,441 of very recent work. If you want a cheap car, there are plenty out there that are less straight with more rust and that need a LOT of money put into them for all the things that are DONE on this car. This car is a bargain if you want to own a good one. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
