Chevy's original Trans Am circuit special is now a Grade-A collectable, and as they've always been popular, now they are also becoming increasingly valuable. Finished in its original Lemans Blue, this Z is exactly what most folks picture when you mention Chevy's ultimate pony car. Meticulously maintained by the same owner for the last 30+ years, this car underwent a thorough restoration a few years ago, and the attention to detail is impressive. The paint job has only been outdoors a few times and it looks dynamite on the F-body's curves. Body and prep work were done right, with the finish professionally applied. With today's paint technology, every car can look like a show car, yet it offers durability that we could only dream of 40 years ago. Lemans Blue, when done right, has an inner glow that makes it radiate off the sheetmetal, and the clean lines of the early Camaro are enhanced by the sophisticated color. Of course, no Camaro is complete without a cowl induction hood, ducktail spoiler, and those slick SS stripes give it a race-ready look that's a Z/28 tradition. Chrome, trim, bezels, and emblems are bright and shiny, looking like either freshly restored items or excellent reproductions. You'll be especially impressed with the all-new interior, and the deluxe bucket seat covers that have been used are an unusual and highly welcome upgrade inside. And when I say all-new, I mean things like the carpets, door panels, headliner, and even the dash pad have been restored or replaced. The gauges are all rebuilt, including the factory tachometer, which was a separate option even in the Z/28. Auxiliary gauges mounted on the leading edge of the center console were also optional, but always welcome, along with the Hurst cue ball shifter atop the standard 4-speed manual transmission. The woodgrained steering wheel matches the dash and center console pretty well, warming up the interior and reminding us that the Z was at least a little bit inspired by European sports cars of the '50s. A newer digital AM/FM stereo head unit and new speakers have been fitted, too. The spotless trunk is truly immaculate, with correct gray spatter paint and not one trace of rust or damage. What truly makes the Z/28 special-and I know I'm preaching to the choir here-is the 302 cubic inch small block V8 under the hood. With a unique combination of high-RPM breathing and bottom-end torque, the potent 302 is the reason Z/28s are so popular. There's Chevy Orange paint on the block, a set of polished finned aluminum valve covers that recall the originals, and a correct chrome air cleaner with reproduction decal. Details like the hoses and clamps are accurate reproductions, and the alternator still uses a large-diameter pulley for stability. Long-tube headers feed dual Flowmasters, and the floors are as clean as the bodywork. Four beautiful Rally wheels have been fitted with right-sized 215/70/15 BFGoodrich radials. This is the Z/28 for the F-body fan who loves to drive. Sure you could have a trailer queen for twice the money, but at this price, it'll be hard to resist the driver's seat.
