Vehicle Detail

We had listed this several months ago and were asked to end the auction to give a buyer time to come see the car. Unfortunately his situation changed and he was unable to come see the car or make a purchase. I spent a few months since then addressing a few issues and now the time has come to get rid of a few toys and free up space, time, and money for other things. Last time I had considered a few trades however most of the trade offers were for cars I had zero interest in. I like high performance sports cars, I don't want to trade for many cars and would really prefer to have the money and space. This car was originally sold by "Joseph Alphabet's Contemporary Classics"Ferrari shop in Newport Beach California in the 1980's. It was built for a customer using a 280z chassis and drivetrain and parts sold through the dealership to make it look similar to the famous Ferrari 250 GTO race cars. The first owner enjoyed the car and drove it in New Mexico until 1999 when we purchased it in an e-bay auction. We drove it about 3 years as we received it, however by this point the paint was tired and nearly everything needed a lot of attention. The decision was made to reinvent the car and make it more accurate in every way. The car was disassembled and the only things reused were the roof, door frames and rear clip. The rear hatch the car had originally was removed and the car became a fixed roof coupe. Everything forward of the windshield was cut off and recreated by me. Inside the car was switched to right hand drive. The pedalbox was converted to a Wilwood pedal setup. The doorskins were remade with small push buttons which were more correct. The wheelbase was lengthened just over 4" to make it more accurate. The firewall was recessed to allow us to install a modern, M70/S70 based dry-sump V-12 and 6-speed manual entirely behind the front cross member. The engine was converted to dry sump with a 4 stage Peterson Dry Sump pump and custom drive and has Schrick cams. The stock fly by wire throttle bodies were replaced with 10mm larger Dellorto manual ones. The dual filters were mounted up front in a position to look much like the GTO's were equipped. The EFI system is controlled by an Electromotive Tec3r ECU. Last year we sent the ECU back to Electromotive where they installed upgraded internals and new custom code for our application. Fuel is fed from a custom aluminum 22 gallon fuel tank with road racing style internal baffles to an Aeromotive A1000 racing pump. Cooling is aided by a custom Ron Davis Racing aluminum, crossflow radiator with integrated shroud and fan. Inside, the dash was hand made by me. It includes all new Autometer gauges, 200mph speedometer, Nardi steering wheel, RJS Racing 5-point harnesses, Hill engineering shift knob, and a vintage-air compact HV A/C system. The heat and defrost are hooked up and working, however I have not mounted a compressor to the engine so to have A/C blowing cold that will need to be done. I recently installed Ground control coilovers, with new Koni inserts, upgraded the 4 wheel disk brakes, and the car has beautiful 72 spoke Dayton knock off wire wheels. In many of the pictures the nose is too high and the new coilovers have lowered the nose almost 2" to look much better. It doesn't have a radio, I felt the engine was the best music, however I did create a place for it in the dash. This car has been the featured centerpiece and the Import Nationals in Carlisle, Pa twice. It has been seen in the Chicago World of Wheels. You can view it on the Today Show, MSNBC, LXTV and in several national magazines and calenders. Here are a few videos of the car: Engine running coming in and out of the Ferris Bueller's day off garage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nzsDiWLQqo From the Today show:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRBgoIIhfJM From LXTV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC2TpUzwL84 I have thousands of pictures of the car and it has been featured/discussed on hundreds of websites. You can view pics by finding me on facebook (search for Michelle Lonnecker, I am the only one). To the best of my knowledge it is the only recreation/replica to have been in the Ferrari Owners club magazine. It creates a stir at every cruise or show we go to and since we redid the car I would bet over 1000 kids have sat in it for pictures (as well as a few hundred adult kids), and two bridal parties. When it was featured outside Wrigley Field last October for the anniversary of Ferris Bueller's day off, Groupon thanked "Ferrari for bringing that amazing car!" In several local Italian car shows this car has won top prizes such as "People's Choice" and even a few "Best in Show" Like any show car or one off there are a few things that could be redone. I had a few revisions I wanted to to do including swapping the racing seats for some that look a little more period correct.I'd like to install a speedometer drive, add an A/C compressor, and the paint is now 7 years old. While it still looks good, with 7 years of drives and shows I know where every blemish is. I lost track of just how much money we have in the car at this point. Total for parts is around $90,000 plus over 3000 hours of labor. If you buy this car you better like attention. At a recent show that had a new Aventador, a stunning Ferrari Daytona spyder, and a 300SL gullwing when a TV crew set up to cover the event they chose to have their interview in front of the GTO. You could enjoy many years of car shows with this car as is, or with a little bit of refinements drive it regularly. If the high bidder would like I could address the issues I mentioned before shipping. The car is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the auction early for a local sale. I would be happy to sell the car with any revisions the new owner might want done after receiving at least a 20% deposit to cover my time and parts. If potential buyers are in the Chicago area they are welcome to come see the car in person. It would take several thousand words to cover all the work I have done building this car. Due to the nature of specially constructed vehicles such as this it can be difficult to track down parts or know what to look at. In this case you are purchasing directly from the person who designed and built the car and I will be available to the new owner as needed to help with any questions the owner or their shop might have. Additionally if the winning bidder is local or can get the car to me I would be happy to do the work myself for a fee we could discuss at that time. Original style recreations of the 250 GTO using 1960's era Ferrari drivetrains and chassis bits are listed from time to time on here for between $350,000 and $1,000,000 depending on the quality of the build. I like to think of this car as almost a street rod version of the GTO as it has more modern suspension, 6 speed, a lighter V12, more power and better brakes. Of course it doesn't compare to an original, but it's a very capable and fun toy. Just looking in the garage puts a smile on my face.. driving anyplace puts me on top of the world. You can share in the fun being part of this car's history for a lot less than an original. One of the originals recently sold for $35,000,000. There is no way to buy a kit of these body panels to make your own. The panels that are out there are not as accurate as what I have done with this car. There are probably fewer than 5 that were not built from the ground up that are the correct wheelbase and this is the only one with a V12. There won't be another opportunity to buy a V12 powered tribute to the 250 GTO for less than $300,000 so as Ferris said, "if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up" If you are considering purchasing the car and would like me to make changes please feel free to contact me to discuss this as well.
