Vehicle Detail

. This early '71 Type III Ghia is in GREAT condition and drives great. It is 1 of 6,565 Cabriolets produced in '71. I recently purchased it from a VW enthusiast who bought it in the late '90's here in San Diego from a guy that owned a VW shop here. He drove it as a second car pretty regularly from 2003-2009 when he started storing it in his inside concrete garage in DownTown San Diego. Since then he started it about once every 6 months and not much more. Before i picked it up it had not been driven more than 50 miles the past 3 years. It sat covered in the garage 95% of the time. Not much is documented about the history unfortunately because it was a cash deal when he had his friend restore it back from 2001-2003 which included full body paint. When he got it, it was its original "Willow Green" (43) paint. He spent roughly $18,000-$23,000 on it from 1999-2003 and it looks and drives amazing. It has a clean California title. The motor is almost 100% dry with the exception of about 1 drop of oil every 2-3 weeks if it is left stationary in a garage or driveway. The Good (Almost Everything): - 2180cc motor with 4-speed manual transmission (approximately 10,000-12,000 miles max since '03). Really makes this spirited and noisy to drive. Engine pulls very strong up hills and shifts great. - Heavy-Duty Clutch. - Metallic Silver paint looks basically new with not a nick or ding that i can find, and i have a pretty discerning eye for that stuff. - Red Carpet looks new as well and shows little-no signs of wear. No stains or marks either. - Red Leather seats are from an E30 BMW 3-Series and are in perfect condition. Very supportive. No tears or signs of wear either. - ALL gauges (fuel/speedometer/tach) function and are lit. Black VDO Tach and Cylinder Head Temp Gauge (temp never moves from 330-340 F once warmed up) added. - Regular and Hi-Beam Headlamps function properly. - 14" Porsche Fuchs Wheels which have NO dings or curbing, but could use a mild surface re-polish to make them 100%. - Michelin Tires have atleast 70% tread left. - KYB White Gas Struts. - Dual Outlet Exhaust (not sneaking around anywhere in this car). - Front Disc Brakes with Rear Drums (stops very effectively without any vibration). - New Mobil-1 Synthetic oil and VW filter. The Unique: - It is a true roadster, meaning it does NOT have a top currently installed on it. Previous owner told me that he was already in it over $20,000 which is waaaay more than he wanted to spend, so since it was a second car in Southern California, a top really isn't needed. You can have a frame and top installed for around $900-$1,600 depending on who you know. - Rubber weather stripping inside of each door sill could use a new strip (3 foot rubber strips that glue into door). - A minimal amount of surface rust is starting to show (as seen in pics) around the motor in the engine bay. Could probably be sanded out. - Could use new battery cables for esthetic purposes. - Glove compartment door doesn't align perfect. (I'm nit-picking here) This is what was able to come up with. I welcome any questions, or can send additional pics if needed. Overall I would say this Ghia is atleast an 8 out of 10. I get nods of approval and thumbs-up daily and it is definitely a conversation piece. Zips as effortlessly through town as it does zooming up the freeway doing 80mph @ 4,300 rpm's. Thank you for viewing!
