The fact that it is also beautifully finished helps, but once you crack the throttle on this one, you won’t care what it looks like, you’ll just be hanging on for your life! The code FF Marina Blue is this car’s original color, and before the big engine went in, they spent a good chunk of time working on the body. The Chevelle’s clean lines seem made for Marina Blue, which emphasizes the crisp body line that runs from headlight to taillight, as well as those cool sail panels flanking the rear window. Bodywork is straight, panel alignment is good, and in the spirit of the sleeper, even the stock hood remains, faux intakes and all. This is a real code 138 SS, so the grille, tail panel, and crossed-flag emblems had to go back on, but by the time anyone notices those details, you’ll be rapidly accelerating out of view. Fortunately, the chrome is great, including the optional bumper guards fore and aft, the vertical taillights are crisply rendered, and the overall look is of a restored trailer queen, not a boulevard brawler. The interior is just as nice, with fresh…well, everything! The bucket seats are cleanly upholstered using original patterns and materials, the carpets are the correct loop, and a center console with clock is a nice accessory that you don’t often find in these cars. But all the combat gear is there, too, including an Auto Meter monster tach on the steering column and a full set of instruments under the dash to keep an eye on the built big block up front. But this is truly a no-compromises car, so there’s also A/C to keep you cool and an AM/FM/cassette stereo with a CD changer and BIG speakers in the trunk. That trunk still offers plenty of room and the custom embossed trunk mat is a trick touch befitting a car of this quality. No idea what it cost, but it surely wasn’t cheap. But beyond all that stuff, the biggest investment is under the hood. Based on a SCAT crank, H-beam rods, and a set of ported and polished heads, the 454 feels like it wants to tear itself out of the car. Up top, there’s an Edelbrock high-rise intake, a Quick Fuel Tech 680 CFM carburetor, and an MSD ignition system to light the fires. For reliability, a March serpentine belt system was installed, then it was all dressed up with braided stainless hoses. The 700R4 4-speed automatic offers a high-stall torque converter, and the overdrive makes it easy to cruise despite the 12-bolt 3.73 Posi out back. Big four-wheel discs, a 3-inch exhaust system, and boxed control arms ensure performance to match its looks. The 17-inch billet wheels aren’t subtle, but they’re necessary to clear the big discs and wear 225/50/17 front and 255/50/17 rear performance radials. The parts alone cost more than the asking price for the whole car, and the build quality is shockingly good. Bowtie performance doesn’t get much better than this.
