Vehicle Detail
My wife and I bought this 1934 Plymouth Deluxe PE in 2001 with our best friend. The car was purchased by her great grandfather in Oregon in 1934. The motor died in about 1952, so the family bought a new car. They kept this old car in storage and forgot about it as life went on. In 2011 I began bringing it back to life. Here's some of the work done: I climbed around underneath and removed 2 five gallon buckets of really old dirt! I cleaned the frame from firewall forward (while motor was removed). I coated the outside with POR 15 for protection, and sprayed bedliner coating on inside of frame for protection. The frame on the car is solid. Surface rust only. I took apart some of the front suspension for cleaning and servicing. The suspension works fine. The original motor was too far gone to rebuild, so I found a 1946 218 Dodge flathead 6 that had been previously rebuilt and was put into storage. I installed all the original 34' parts and accessories on the motor and it is as close to the original as one could get. It appears stock to the car. I changed the oil and tuned it up. I had the generator rebuilt and I also rebuilt the carb. The motor runs great with no leaks. The transmission and driveline and rear axle are all original. I changed the fluids in them and replaced the wheel bearings and seals. I also had the original clutch relined and installed a new throwout bearing. I had a new exhaust pipe installed (complete from exhaust manifold to tailpipe). I serviced the brake system-Honed wheel cylinders and master cylinder. Flushed lines ect. Cleaned up inner hub components. Replaced front rubber brake lines. I removed the gas tank and cleaned it inside and out, sealed the inside, and painted the outside of the tank. I replaced the fuel lines. I replaced the wood panel under the seat, and cleaned the surface rust on floor and painted it. Floor is solid! We upholstered the seat to original appearance, but with modern foam and materials for better comfort and durability. The rumble seat is still all original! (The old violin case looks right at home back there (see pic)! I made door panels using the originals as patterns. New battery and cables. (6 v.). New Coker tires on the original wheels (they were black, but I took the liberty of painting them red for some color "POP". New YNZ wire harness and reproduction turn signal handle. I installed a 2nd light in back so the car has brake lights and turn signals.. I recovered the top vinyl over the original wood frame. I'm sure there’s more. My goal was to keep things as original as possible and make the car safe and reliable. The paint appears to be original. There are rust spots in the usual places on these cars. It is on the bottom of the panels on each side of doors (see pic’s). The rest of the car is solid and any rust is patina surface rust. I think it's nice to be able to see the condition before a restoration. We entered it in some cruise ins and were pleasantly surprised when it would win trophies and awards. We entered it in the biggest summer cruise in in Portland (Beaches) and out of 1,700 entries, our car was one of 10 to be chosen to go up front and receive awards. I’m guessing there is going to be a lot of interest in this car, so I included as many photos as possible and given as much info as I can. I’m happy to answer questions. Good Luck to all! Thanks, Darren. Contact me for morephotos, I could only put 24 on ebay. (Note: All gauges are intact, but fuel gauge and temp gauge aren’t working yet. Also the 34’ has unique side windows. Driver’s side functions, I removed pass side to work on it. I have all pc’s but the glass (I have the glass but they are caramel) needs replaced. Windshield in great functioning condition(cranks in & out). Rear glass functions but has a bullet hole(see pic-you gotta love it!!!) I can’t think of any other issues. Of course this is a running, driving survivor that needs restored, but that’s the beauty of this car!) Here are answers to a couple questions I get: I have kept the car dry in a garage since I got it 11 years ago, so the rust you see came with the car. The reason I'm selling it is I am a muscle car guy at heart and I aquired a 1971 Buick Skylark Custom Convertible that I want to work on. I don't have room for both cars. Thanks!
