A full-sized convertible with a monster 454 under the hood, a powerful stereo system, and those towering 24-inch rims, it’s an overpowering statement for the guy who appreciates going big. The Impala was Chevy’s top-of-the-line machine, and as such, it was a full-sized luxury cruiser that could pack the same kind of muscle as a Chevelle SS. With room for six in a handsomely styled package, it’s a slam dunk in the looks department, but the stunning black paint on this one takes it to an entirely different level. The paint is new, and the finish is so uniform, deep, and rich that it looks like a black hole has landed on Earth and taken the form of a Chevy. There must be several hundred hours of bodywork involved in this car by some pretty talented guys and it shows. Gaps are good, even on a big convertible like this, and despite those massive wheels, from the outside the car has a very factory look. All the original chrome went back on, plus the usual blacked-out SS grille and hidden headlights that were part of the Impala’s makeover in the late 60s. There’s a lot of inky black sheetmetal here, and it looks awesome. It’s unusual to find buckets in a full-sized Impala, but the fully restored interior is a nice combination of original-style equipment and a few modern upgrades and styling tricks. There is, of course, a center console with a horseshoe shifter, and the original dash is in great shape. However, the instrument panel is now full of digital gauges framed by a custom billet steering wheel, and there’s one heck of a sound system aboard. The AM/FM/CD stereo head unit in the dash, which works with a pair of Kicker amps to power massive subwoofers in the custom-upholstered trunk as well as a smattering of speakers throughout the interior. Clearly, this was a guy who liked his music, as the seats wear custom “Presidential Music” logos that are quite nicely done. Add in a snug-fitting black convertible top that powers up and down easily, and you have one heck of a rolling entertainment center. This Imp is more than just a pretty face, however, and there’s plenty of muscle under the hood to make things interesting. A built 454 big block is dressed for show with tons of chrome and polished aluminum, so it’s not like you’ll have to keep the hood shut at shows. An Edelbrock intake, 4-barrel carburetor, and MSD ignition system give it some extra grunt, along with a set of long-tube headers and a full Flowmaster dual exhaust system. A TH350 3-speed automatic makes for care-free cruising and powers a 12-bolt rear that hangs on stock coils and air shocks. The brakes have been rebuilt and live behind those amazing 3-piece Ashanti wheels wearing 225/30/24 front and 275/30/24 rear low-profile radials. All the hard work is done, this car just needs someone to put it over the top and it’ll stop the show every time.
