Rare is the machine that you can buy today and enjoy for a few years, and still expect to get your money out of it. This 1957 Chevy Bel Air hardtop is such a car. With a professional restoration that was finished just a few years ago, the Matador Red finish is still retina-searing, and is perhaps the best choice for your ’57. Workmanship is astoundingly good, with super straight bodywork and tight gaps, and even at a glance you can tell that someone sweated the details on this one. Bel Air hardtops remain near the top of the Tri-Five food chain, surpassed only by the ragtop equivalents, and everyone who sees this car rolling down the highway knows exactly what it is. It is also loaded with accessories, including the continental kit that has been painted to match, fender skirts, and dual deck-mounted antennas. Restoring the brightwork on a ’57 Chevy can be a daunting task, but every bit of chrome and stainless on this car glitters like jewelry and has been finished to better-than-new condition. The interior has also been professionally restored to stock specifications, including the lovely black and red seats which are pure 1950s style. The fabrics have a subtle texture that’s both durable and stylish, with a fit that is worlds better than original. Engine-turned panels make the dashboard glitter, and an instrument panel inspired by the jet age is full of restored gauges that are fully functional. A 2-speed PowerGlide and associated column shifter compliment the fully restored steering wheel and horn ring, and seatbelts have been added for safety. The original radio remains in the dash, but cleverly concealed in the glovebox is a Kenwood control unit for an AM/FM/Sirius Satellite system. The only other noteworthy modification is a removable console on the transmission tunnel, but for cruising you’ll find it invaluable. This car was originally equipped with a 283 cubic inch V8, and that’s what lives there now. Fully detailed for show, the engine bay is a symphony of finishes and textures that replicate factory techniques. Chevy Orange on the engine itself always looks great, but with the ‘Chevrolet’ script highlighted in silver, you knew you were getting something special when you pulled off the dealer’s lot. This is also a factory power steering car, with the correct pump mounted to the back of the original generator. Even the braking system is factory correct without any of the typical “upgrades” you see on so many ‘57s. Heck, even the hose clamps are correct wire style pieces holding on to reproduction hoses with proper GM stampings. It is almost spotless underneath, showing only light signs of use and absolutely zero rust. A reproduction dual exhaust system sounds right, and it rides on 14-inch wide whitewall radials wearing original wheelcovers. This is a great-running Bel Air that you can drive without worries, and it still remains highly competitive on the show field.
