Recently restored to stock specifications with no questionable “upgrades,” it’s the ideal starter hobby car or a great addition to a growing collection in need of one of Henry’s ladies. Chicle and Copra Drab is an unusual but completely correct combination for a 1930 Model A (in fact, the 1930 roadster that my father has owned for 40 years is these exact colors) and once you see it in person, you’ll fall in love. Not flashy, but with the straw-colored wheels and pinstripes, it’s interesting and quite attractive and will definitely stand out from the rows of maroon and blue and green examples. Finish work is excellent, and since this car comes out of long-time Georgia ownership, rust and wood rot were never an issue. Given the massive resources out there for restoring a Model A, it’s no surprise that this one is quite nicely done and very accurate, with doors that fit snugly, a nicely aligned hood, and perhaps most interestingly, a trunk instead of a rumble seat, making this a true 2-seater. And this is the deluxe model, which features cowl lights, twin taillights, and a traditional quail hood ornament up front, along with an accessory radiator guard. For a Model A, the interior is nicely appointed, with a comfortable bench seat and fully upholstered door panels. The material looks right for the 1930s and has simple vertical pleats that were standard on all closed models. The dash is the same one all Fords got in 1930, although this appears to be a late 1930 model with the round speedometer and more ornate gauge panel. All the original hardware and controls are there, including the steering-wheel-mounted headlight controls right under the horn button, throttle and spark levers on the steering column, and fuel shut-off under the dash. Aftermarket turn signals were added in the name of touring safety, and they’re definitely a smart upgrade. Touring is all the more enjoyable with the large trunk in back, which also carries an accessory crank handle, tire pump, and lug wrench. All Model As, even the trucks, got the same torquey 200 cubic inch four cylinder engine, with the one in this coupe being fully rebuilt. All the correct equipment is there, from the flat copper plug leads to the original 6V generator, and the block wears just the right shade of Ford Green. Even the hose clamps are correct and the wiring harness features cloth-wrapped wires as original. Mechanical brakes are surprisingly effective given the A’s light weight, and you’ll find that this coupe keeps up with traffic easily and cruises happily at 45 MPH on the open road thanks to new whitewall tires on the original 19-inch wire wheels. Don’t miss an opportunity to own a tight, nice-driving A with a recent restoration that remains quite A-Ford-able.
