Vehicle Detail
1972 VW Westfalia camper bus in California. Dual weber carbs. Still wears the Blue California plates issued in 1972. Runs fine, Nice original condition. Very nice interior for its age. NO RESERVE I found this camper in the owners driveway when looking for split window bus parts. The second owner was a surf guy and parked the bus years ago. Bus comes with roof racks, but sorry, I keep the vintage long board. He stated that he rebuilt the engine to 2100 and installed the dual webers 30K ago. If so, then I assume the odometer has rolled over. I can not confirm the rebuild and displacement but this bus is indeed faster than any I have ever driven, so something good is going on back there. We installed new 185/65/14 Federal Formosa tires. New master cylinder and disc brake pads up front. New battery and new windshield with tint across the top. It has new all new pop top seals. We dropped the engine to get the gas tank out. Cleaned and coated it. Cleaned off the engine, changed oil and replaced it all. The bus starts and runs good but could use a good dual carb adjustment. We put about 1000 miles on it to shake it out. No running issues. I have a clear title in our name and it is registered for another 6 months. The new title came back to me with 1973 printed on it. (Thank you California DMV for being dysfunctional) This is not correct, the date on the VIN decal is indeed 1972 as was also writen on the old title. I can easily fix this with DMV. Or you can do so when you retitle. You tell me and I will fix it. It is NOT and issue to fix. The canvas pop top has a few small holes in it from storage, see pics. I would use it as-is because it is rather good otherwise and not really an issue for the short time you use it. It has the rare optional childs cot for sleeping over the front seats. We put a new set of original TMI basket weave front seat covers on. The dash is rather good with no splits or cut up. This camper has a refridgerator, NOT an ice box. Rather rare I am told. It has a 12 volt and a 120 volt plug. Not sure how to set it in the on position. There are rotating knobs to turn it off and on but the faceplate is rubbed off and I can not tell how to turn on or set temp or correctly switch from 12 to 120 volt. It may work, just not smart enough to get it done. The interior is rather nicefor its age and not altered. Bed folds down, seat covers good condition, has the rare camper 4 leg stool that everyone wants. So the camper is nice inside. The exterior is original and has faded paint, nice patina. A few dings and dents as you can see in the pics. There are surface spots where the paint has become thin. You can see in pictures. These are NOT rot holes. just thin paint. I rubbed a few off with steel wool, so those are not issues. The only rust spot I found of any consequence was where water sat under the rubber mat in a small area behind the drivers feet. See the pic. There are a few small holes there from water under the rubber mat. Not from any salt and road crud like east coast cars. Rubber mats are the worst thing for trapping moisture. I treated the area with rust converter and paint to stop it. There is a picture of the underside and it shows where the paint is thin but no rot out. Typical underside. The nose has some dents and a repair spot, see pics. Camper includes the new nose bra and tire cover. Most of the lights work, even the 3 interior lights. Turn signals, one brake and tail light and gas gauge do not work. Headlights, high beams, front running lights work fine. The wipers work intermittently. Have not cleaned some wires ands switches but they need cleaning from sitting so long. We have not cleaned any electrical terminals yet. Everyone will ask, Can we drive it home? Well, I would. I have driven it 2 hours out and back in one trip with no issues. But the camper is sold as-is because it is old. Anything can happen. Come by and have a look if near Temecula California. Bid what you think it is worth to you. For reference, check out other westy listings and you can see how reasonable this one is for being a California camper. Look by a couple westys that sold, ebay listing numbers 280948732992 and 170904305279. You can see that this listing is very fair. Always interested in hearing what you think it is worth to you. Sold as-is, no regrets, NO RESERVE. Paypal $500 deposit in 24 hours. Balance in 3 days by cashiers check or cash. Can store the camper for 30 days here.
