Vehicle Detail
1978 Pontiac Trans Am In the 1970s, Pontiac was one of the few domestic automakers who remembered how to make horsepower. This 1978 Trans Am is proof enough. Still packing the Pontiac 400 cubic inch, 6.6 liter, V8 that made early Trans Ams so special and cranking out a respectable 220 horsepower. Mated to an automatic W72 transmission, a pair of two-latch Hurst T-Tops and sporting a retro-cool gold paint job with the famous firebird hood decal, it's a piece of 1970s performance that's actually pretty impressive on the road. The color is called Solar Gold, and it was the second special edition color following two years of all black 'Bandit' Trans Ams. Most gold Trans Ams, including this one, were built in Norwood, Ohio due to paint restrictions in place at the Van Nuys, California plant. The Van Nuys cars had a greenish tint to them due to the different paint formulation; if you want a Solar Gold Trans Am, make sure there's an N in the 7th digit of the VIN. With only 47,152 original miles, this T/A is in great condition throughout, showing careful ownership and excellent care throughout its life. As is typical with these cars, even those built in Norwood, the color is inconsistent between panels, and especially on the urethane bumpers and spoilers. Of course, enthusiasts have come to embrace these irregularities, wearing them as badges of honor on their original cars, and it's more proof of this car's authenticity. These cars were also heavy on the decals, but they remain in good condition with little fading and excellent adhesion. The blacked-out grilles and headlight buckets are in great condition with very little imperfections and no UV damage, and the cool Trans Am taillights are still bright and clear. The only way Trans Ams came in 1978 was loaded which included, A/C, cruise control, tilt steering wheel and bucket seats. The tan seats in this car remain in good condition with minimal wear. The dash features a nice engine-turned panel that houses a full array of functional gauges as well as the original AM/FM/8 Track radio. Next to the 100 mph speedometer, visible through the three-spoke tilt-steering wheel, is an emblem proudly proclaiming that this car has a Radial Tuned Suspension. The dash pad, console, door panels and even the headliner are all in astonishingly good shape, with no cracking or fading and just one small scratch on the passenger side as shown in the picture. At the far right end of the dashboard is the glove compartment door through which an air conditioning duct protrudes. The trunk release is hidden inside the glove box. On the console between the front bucket seats are the power window switches beneath the automatic transmission shift lever and above the flip-lid console. You'll notice that this is an authentic power window car, with those round, black Firebird emblems on the doors installed to hide the holes where the window cranks would ordinarily be. This WS6, 400 cubic inch V8 sounds great, and still moves this car down the road! The block is covered in Pontiac Blue paint with a shaker hood scoop and original chrome valve covers. The chassis portrays signs of proper maintenance and good care. There is a small area on the driver’s side rear bumper that shows some cracking and chipping paint and another small area behind the passenger side T-Top that has been primed due to a small disturbance in the paint. Not bad at all for its 34 year lifespan! The rumbling dual exhaust creates simple brute horsepower. The wheels are the famous Pontiac 15x8 'snowflake' alloys, painted gold to match the body and has factory sized 225/70/15 Goodyear radials. Today, these cars are seeing a strong surge in values, no doubt driven by nostalgia as buyers finally have the ability to purchase the cars of their childhood dreams. Solar Gold Trans Ams are a lot less common than the black special editions, and this one's combination of low mileage and excellent originality makes it a smart buy. Best of all, this is still a car that gets respect on the streets, even 34 years later. Legends are like that! ***The lines from the ceiling are reflecting in some of the pictures*** For more information call Roger at 515.975.7777
