Vehicle Detail
1988 Chevrolet IROC Z28 Convertible Here is a prime opportunity to own one of the most legendary muscle car convertibles in the automotive world. This absolutely stunning 1988 IROC-Z28 Camaro convertible was freshly painted in the factory bright red paint like the day it rolled on to the showroom floor. IROC-Z's were around since 1985. When the executives in the boardroom at Chevrolet woke up, they decided to make the same cool car in a convertible in 1988. This fine example is the first year of the IROC-Z Convertible. Only a mere 3,761 convertible's out of the 27,811 IROC-Z hardtops were produced in '88. This rare Z is becoming more valuable and highly sought after by the day!!! To purchase a fully loaded Z series convertible of this magnitude you had to be in an elite status financially. The fact of the matter is, it cost almost $9,000 dollars more than an IROC-Z hardtop, and nearly $11,000 more than a standard Camaro Coupe. You did indeed need to be well off to own this car!!! In other words, this was, and still is thee 3rd generation Camaro to have. IROC stands for “International Race Of Champions” which was a professional racing series debuted in 1974 using the Porsche. From 1975 to 1991, the Chevy Camaro was used in place of the Porsche, since it was more affordable to maintain between races. It was called the race of champions purely because every driver’s car had the same capabilities. The difference was the skill level that each driver possessed. Famous drivers such as Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Mario Andretti, and many others from all across the world participated in this series making it international. In 1985, Chevrolet entered into a licensing agreement with the IROC series, and as a result obtained the right to use the “IROC” name on their production cars. Thus in '85 the IROC-Z was born and introduced as an add-on package to the Camaro Z28. For those who wanted the more aggressive looking and higher performance model, the IROC-Z28 was the way to go. In 1990 Chevrolet’s licensing agreement expired, so production of the well known “IROC-Z” came to an abrupt end. The series lasted a total of 5 years making this car a very rare gem amongst collectors and enthusiasts. Now moving on from the exciting history of the IROC-Z. I’ll describe to you why this car is the one you want to own. In my opinion this is one of the baddest and most awesome looking rides on the road! The best part is……IT’S A DROP TOP!!! Gosh! I can’t even begin to explain how sweet it feels to be cruisin' this car. When you’re going a steady 55 miles an hour down the highway, wink wink, with the top down, the wind blowing through your hair, and the duals humming out the back, you feel a sense of euphoric freedom. I’ve been fortunate enough to feel this sensation many times driving this beautiful piece of American Made Muscle. It is very dis-heartening for me to sell this special car, but I don't have any other options right now. This is a georgeous RED on black 1988 IROC-Z28 droptop with the bad boy IROC-Z badging and stripes. This incredible machine looks awesome!!! The infamous black louvered hood, the ground effects, and the rear spoiler make this one tough looking machine. When the top goes down nothing else compares!! The top still appears is in very nice condition. The rear window is clear with no yellowing, and the top material is the very expensive soft cloth as ordered when new from the factory. These tops were all manual, and it goes up and down with minimal effort. In case of a quick flash rain storm it can be put up relatively instantly, as opposed to having to wait if it were power. There is some minor hardware missing under the awesome tonneau cover that locks the top down in the well. I never bothered to replace it, because it doesn't hinder the top from working great. This car is far superior to the base model IROC-Z that came with the L03(TBI) throttle body injected motor. This rare IROC is equipped with the upgraded LB9 (TPI) “Tuned Port Injection” V8 engine that boasts an extra 25 horsepower with 40 pounds of torque over the base motor. The transmission is the 700-R4 known for being gutsy, but also saving gasoline at cruising speeds. As part of the IROC-Z Special Performance Package a stiffer bracing, and bushing material was used compared to the standard Camaro. I'm pretty sure this is the exact same suspension as the Corvette had to make it grip the road like glue, and make this Z look more aggressive. Other aspects of the suspension package include better steering with the unique recirculating ball power steering that has a fast 12.7:1 ratio with limited boost to improve road handling. In addition, this IROC-Z has McPhearson struts, and special chassis bracing. This package includes full instrumentation with factory gauges, and the factory tachometer that works well. On top of that it was factory ordered with the upgraded optional 16” inch alloy sport wheels, bolted up to a limited slip differential posi traction (G 80) rear-end. This fine Chevrolet is fully loaded with the most expensive upgrade available to this car, the IROC Z convertible OPTION 3 package, code (ISC). At a whopping $2218 back in '88 that was no small change!! Included are power steering, power disc brakes, tilt wheel, power windows, power door locks, dual power sport mirrors, 6 way adjustable power drivers seat, cruise control, air conditioning, needs a charge, black bucket seats with center console, folding rear bucket seats for extra storage when needed, power trunk locking mechanism, and automatic overdrive!!! The stereo system is an AM/FM CP/MP3/AUX player that sounds great even with the top down. This IROC was freshly painted in the factory red basecoat/clearcoat for the ultimate in shine and luster. The odometer has barely rolled over once, so this IROC has many many more years of top down cruising left to enjoy. Please read this next paragraph after viewing the vehicle history report, so you can bid with confidence! I felt the need to try and set the record straight regarding the vehicle history report. I had no idea about the status of this sweet Z until this car was listed up for auction. From what I can decipher by looking over that report, it seems that on 03/28/2003 when this car was registered at the motor vehicle department, they failed to place the 100,000 amount in the proper area. It should have been submitted as 102,822 instead of 2,822. That makes the most sense to me! It would have been insane to think that this car only had 2,822 miles on it being 15 years old. Most likely it was the typically uneducated DMV workers that could careless about doing there job properly. Next up the report shows a local emissions source mishap in Skokie. That happens to be where I grew up, so it didn't take me long to figure this one out. I've been to several of those locations while I was growing up, and I can tell you firsthand that the employees at those emissions stations were always under trained trying to get every car in and out as fast as they could. It doesn't surprise me one bit that they entered the mileage in at 65,000 on 05/02/2005. Who hires these people?? If they were trained properly there would be nothing wrong with this hisory report. These instances all happened prior to my ownership. Well, All I can speak for are the miles on the car since I've owned it. I am one of the most honest people you will ever meet, and I believe when I received this car it had 109,000 miles on it. I only drove it in the summers, and on nice sun shiny days. Therefore, After using all the common sense I possess, In my mind I have to believe that this car has exactly 112,673 miles on it. That comes out to an average of only being driven 4,506 miles a year when this car advances to antique status after it turns 25 years old in 3 months. That would be considered extremely low mileage in any day and age. I truly believe the mileage on the odometer to be accurate, and after inspecting the odometer it looks to be the original odometer that came with the car. Furthermore, There are no more emission requirements on antique cars! At least none that I know of in Wisconsin and Illinois. In these two states only 1997 and up are required to be tested. I wanted to be upfront for those who pay attention to these types of reports. There were no accidents reported on this car EVER! Don't allow yourself to miss out on your dream car, because of someone else's mistake! If I had time to wait until spring I feel this IROC would sell for a great deal more. My loss is your gain! Some lucky winning bidder is going to get themselves a whole lot of car for their money. This IROC is a steal for whatever it ends up selling for on Thursday night! I truly hope this car brings the next owner as much pleasure and enjoyment as it did for me. At the stroke of midnight on January 1st, 2013, this IROC will officially become an antique, which will send this droptop into a whole new category of American Muscle Car history. Get it while it's hot and affordable. Once an antique this model is certain to escalate in value even more. This car is for the guy or girl that had one or always wanted one in highschool and would like to relive the past. Maybe you could'nt afford the top of the line IROC-Z convertible back in the day, but now you can!! This car would also be a great to cruise into the local drive-in movie theater or the neighborhood car shows. I try to list everything I can think of when I write a description to make the prospective next owners well informed with what they are bidding on. If there is anything you feel I may have missed, or something else you would like to know, please ask. I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. This IROC-Z28 runs great, and stops great! This is a "No Reserve" auction, and will sell to the highest bidder Thursday evening. Please have all of your funds in order prior to placing any bids! Good Luck and Happy Bidding! On Sep-17-12 at 18:35:59 PDT, seller added the following information: Just an FYI: This auction will be ending on Saturday evening on a 5-day auction! Thanks!
