information@RKMotorsCharlotte.com 5527 Lakeview Road, Charlotte, NC, 28269, US 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 22,809 Actual Mile Trans Am WS6 W72 400 V8 T10 4 Speed Year: 1979 Type of vehicle title: Clear Primary color: White Mileage: 22809 Transmission type: 4 Speed Manual Engine: 400 V8 Interior color: Black Vehicle info As kids, we all have dream cars which hang on our walls, haunt our favorite TV shows and pervade our psyches as something we'd someday like to own. But, by the time we reach the 'age of responsibility' a lot of those cars have become investment grade classics which can only be enjoyed by a select few with plenty of disposable income. About the only way to change that sad reality is blind luck or seizing the day and getting in on the trend early. Second generation Trans Ams are unique cars that have been trending upward for a while now; and for the astute classic car buyer, they present an opportunity to either grab something to cherish for a lifetime or make a solid profit a few years down the road. Take this low mileage 1979 Tran Am; it's a fully documented, all original time capsule which comes factory equipped with Pontiac's highly desirable 6.6 litre W72 engine and a Borg Warner T10 4-speed transmission for a FRACTION of what most investment grade classics cost. So, if you're one of those guys who keeps prolonging his satisfaction with 'maybe someday', act now because cars like this aren't going hang around and stay cheap for too much longer. One of the many documents included with this sale is an original dealer invoice which lists all of the cars factory optioned equipment. Below I have listed that equipment and decoded the car's cowl tag to confirm this Trans Am is exactly as it left the factory 32 years ago. Exceptionally maintained since the day its proud owner parked it in his driveway, the car has never been taken apart for any restoration or major body repairs and still presents a clear and flat coat of original GM code 11 Cameo White paint. Since those straight and rust free original body panels have never been disassembled, they still display completely accurate panel gaps which give the car surprisingly solid fit and a cool factory fresh appearance which modern builds simply can't duplicate. On top of the bright and glossy water based paint, a menacing five-color 'screaming chicken' hood graphic perfectly complements a full outfit of four-color Trans Am decals which let even the most clueless by-standers know that they're staring at one special car. By 1979, Pontiac's base Trans Am was mixing a major dose of attitude with a slew of upscale options; and its exterior styling reflected that added sophistication through an increased attention to detail and a largely monochromatic appearance. Up front, a slick and pliable urethane bumper houses four pristine headlights above large dual grilles which, while still being instantly identifiable as Pontiacs familiar split grille look, give the car a much more cohesive face. Behind that front bumper, a traditional shaker hood sits in front of pristine original Soft Ray tinted glass and proudly displays "T/A 6.6" denoting the cars rare and optional W72 Pontiac engine. Behind the windshield, mirror tinted Fisher T-tops sit above chrome GM door handles with white tape stripes, body matched sport mirrors and correct rear wheel air deflectors. At the sides of the car, stainless trim spears with body matched inserts run from traditional metal Pontiac fender vents past well-maintained stainless door guards to pristine B-pillar mounted three-color 'screaming chicken' decals. At the back of the car, a fresh tail light panel sits above a pristine bumper which displays no cracks, and correct Firebird-exclusive side splitter stainless steel exhaust tips. Pop this Trans Ams long, colorful hood and you'll find an all original PWH stamped 400 cubic inch W72 engine which, in the eyes of many hardcore Pontiac enthusiasts, is the last true Pontiac V8 ever produced. Thanks to government mandated emissions standards, performance had almost been legislated out of existence, and that left the Trans Am suffering a bit of an identity crisis. By utilizing smaller "6X" heads from a 350 and a revised camshaft, the W72 created higher compression and successfully reversed almost a decade of declining horsepower numbers. At the top of the motor, an original Rochester 4-barrel carburetor sits under the cars awesome shaker scoop and an original HEI distributor sends power to the cylinders through black plug wires. Below that carburetor, original GM corporate blue paint coats the entire block and original exhaust manifolds send exhaust into a high performance factory exhaust system. All the hard parts around the motor, from the belt driven accessories to the brake booster and air conditioning hanging on the fire wall are factory original, as are the decals and signature satin finish chrome valve covers. The car's clean engine bay and hood are covered in a nice coat of GM factory black, and all the belts and hoses appear to be in good working order. Take a look under this all original Trans Am and you'll find a straight, rust-free frame which still displays a nice coat of GM satin black paint, and clean, solid floors which carry absolutely no defect camouflaging undercoating. Behind the motor, a W72-exclusive Borg Warner T10 4-speed manual transmission sends power to the cars original 10 bolt rear end, and a standard WS6 handling package. For 1979, the newly dubbed WS6 package included larger sway bars, better shocks and springs, a tighter steering gear box and newly designed code J65 power front and rear disc brakes that, when combined with the cars standard power steering, made for serious handling ability and greatly reduced stopping distances. In the middle of the floor pans, an original dual exhaust system still carries original GM mufflers and catalytic converters in front of correct stainless side splitter tips, and, at the corners of the car, power flows to the pavement through ORIGINAL 225/70 white letter Goodyear Polysteel Radials and awesome, original 15 inch snowflake wheels. All of the cars hardware and bushings appear to be in good shape throughout, and the entire undercarriage is more befitting of a garaged weekend cruiser than a 32 year old pony car. Open this Trans Ams solid doors and you'll find an absolutely pristine original deluxe interior that shows virtually no signs of wear at all. The firm and comfortable high backed seats are especially nice pieces which have the supple appearance of much more expensive hardware, and the original black carpet looks great beneath correct rubber mats. In the middle of the car, a clean black console houses chrome switches for optional power windows behind a chrome Hurst shifter with a cool Pontiac shift knob. Above the seats, a stain free headliner is stretched tight around the cars mirrored tops and optional dome lamp; and in front of the seats, an excellent looking engine turned dash bezel houses crystal clear gauges above HVAC controls and an original Delco-GM AM/FM cassette player. At the sides of the car, awesome, plush door panels feature bright red emblems above well-maintained stainless trim, chrome switches and chrome handles. And in front of the driver, a correct aluminum Formula steering wheel sits on an optional tilt steering column. Behind the cockpit, the car's pristine trunk is lit by an optional courtesy light and carries its original Stowaway spare tire and jack below proper decklid decals. Documentation included with this sale is: the cars original dealer invoice, copies of the cars original build sheets, the cars original owner's manuals and warranty booklets, Pontiac Historical Services paperwork, a reproduction window sticker, a factory brochure and date correct advertisement and a couple of quick summary sheets listing significant facts about the car. This clean 1979 Trans Am is the perfect opportunity to own an investment grade muscle car that you can still drive around town and show off. We've featured many of these F2 Trans Ams in the past three years, and without exception, they've all sold very quickly. There's a devoted following who knows these are underrated cars, and all original pristine survivors like this one are exceptionally difficult to find.
