Vehicle Detail
Karmann Ghia On Aug-12-12 at 13:56:45 PDT, seller added the following information: This car has been going through a total frame off restoration for some time now, and I hope my words can do it justice. I have included a picture of the car before the process was started when the car was blue. However the car was originally yellow. The whole process has been well documented and most receipts have been retained. It started when the original owner who was then retired decided to put in new floor pans because the battery had leaked and eaten away the floor. And slowly but surely piece by piece the car was taken apart labeled and boxed; How you get from replacing floor pans to a total nuts a bolt restoration I do not know but that is exactly what happened. That was in 1995 there are receipts from then for the floor pans and subsequently other parts. This restoration has been a combination of professional and amateur dependent on the skill levels required; entrusting the major stuff to the professionals. I have added a few pictures to aid the sale but there is full documentation in two ring binders along with many many printed photographs. This will all go with the vehicle. So let’s start from the ground up. The pan and all things connected is either new, reconditioned or just in good shape. Starting with and not limited to. All new tires, all new brakes, bearings clips fasteners, shock absorbers, the transmission was rebuilt the drive shafts where replaced. The steering box was rebuilt all the steering parts replaced. I cannot emphasize enough just how many hours of work have been put into the pan alone. When I say new brakes I am not just talking replacing the pads or shoes but everything including all the brake lines both metal and rubber, so from the smallest clip to the main master cylinder where replaced with new. And the same attention to detail was included to every part of the restoration. The body has also had some major work done as you can see from the photos. So new rockers both inner and outer and heater channels replaced new wheel arches and a front lower nose clip. The whole car was striped to bare metal and a rust inhibitor was applied (etching primer) then another very heavy coat of red primer again which has a rust inhibitor in there. Then the seams where the welding was done where treated again this was done again by a professional body shop I did try this myself but way too much sanding for my liking then a coat of gray primer was added. Then any small blemished where there fixed and yet another coat of primer which is where it is at now. The body is ready for a final wet sand and paint. Each coat of primer was hand sanded. A new body to pan gasket was added and all new mounting rubbers and bolt so now they are back together again. The doors line up better than they did when the car was new all the lines flow smoothly. Oh new door hinges and fitting kit on there also there all this is in the documentation but I know there is much I have missed. I have missed one big part the motor!! As you can imagine the motor was not spared any expense either. The whole thing was rebuilt but the bug guy at temple machine this is all documented again including a Marhle forged big bore kit, not a huge one fortunately just an 87mm but it has a hotter cam in there also and some other fancy stuff like hollow valves for better cooling.. oh yes better cooling it has a high output oil pump which has outputs to a real oil filter!!! This motor is fully documented on paper and I do not understand much of it. I know there are instructions from the builder on how to time it from when he ran it on the dyno. This motor has never been installed or run and is ready to go. I know the labor cost on this alone was almost $1000 then about the same again on parts. So to recap the car as it stands is ready for paint then it needs an interior and a new wiring harness the seats are there and in great shape apart from the covers that something you want new anyways. All other parts are there lights chrome trim the chrome is in great shape and Does not need recoating. The top is in good shape too but I had planned to restore it also it does have the pop out glass rear window with the defrost!! If I can I will put the roof on loosely this coming week and take a picture but no promises failing that I will just open it on the floor and take a picture. If you have read this far I know you will have questions and please feel free to ask. I know this is a lot of money for a project car but its so close to being finished and has had so much money invested I imagine close to $20,000 with labor or 10,000 in parts alone. Why is it for sale? I have run out or steam and I will be losing my workspace/ storage soon. On Aug-12-12 at 14:21:56 PDT, seller added the following information: I will be happy to work with shippers and could safley pack all the parts into the car for shipping. Also I am willing to consider all viable offers.
