Vehicle Detail
Here is a 1938 Studebaker Express Coupe. Here is the information as we know it on this truck....I have had this truck in my possession since the late 1960's....I am the second owner of this vehicle....It was purchased new by a large farming company in our area... This truck was used as a service truck on a ranch. The truck was used on the road until 1964 when the brakes failed and it was retired from service. Being used on the ranch for equipment service, the bed, frame and the entire truck was covered with mud, grease and oil. My dad and I started to work on the truck around 1970. We removed the bed and the rear fenders, we steamed cleaned the bed, frame and cab....Inasmuch as the brakes were bad, I believe we located wheel cylinders had the drums turned and replaced the brake lining. The master cylinder is frozen and probably the wheel cylinders... Unfortunately about that time we stopped work on the Studebaker. In the pictures, the rear fenders were set up for picture taking...The bed is loose from the frame and the fenders are loose from the bed. Additional information/questions answered: 1. Yes, the gas tank is still in the rear frame...No immediate signs of leaks however there are some major dents on the bottom.... 2. The gauge assembly is in the dash and is intact without any but minor cracking......plastic is weathered and has turned light tan from probably clear at one time...All the gauges are still marked and visible...The oil pressure gauge worked when started...Function of the others unknown 3. There is major sheet metal damage behind the front bumper to the bottom of the grille and the very bottom of the grille has some damage..... 4. No, I have never driven the truck on the road....As I recall, some 30 years ago, when running, we did drive around the shop and I am sure the transmission did shift and the rear end was ok....This is remembering from 30+ years ago...... 5. I did not try to assemble the metal spare tire cover but hopefully all the sheet metal is there....The chrome knob and maybe related small pieces to retain the spare are missing.... What I do know is that this truck was used commercially and is now and was always stored outside. When we got the truck, we were able to start it with a few minor repairs...We started it occasionally but about 30 years ago it appeared the fuel pump went out...The truck sat outside, not running all this time. Last week I decided to bring the truck to the shop and start it....The engine WAS NOT frozen...We put a little "mystery oil" in the cylinders, cleaned the plugs, put some used plug wires on it, filed and adjusted the points and used an outside source for fuel and the truck started with no trouble and we let it idle for several minutes....The oil pressure at idle was near 35#. The old fan belt started to shred so we shut it off. We had to "hot wire" it as the key had disappeared, The ignition switch is intact and not damaged. We DO NOT have the seats and part of the retainer for the spare tire. The outside door handles and latch assemblies were missing and I years ago found those but they look and work good but may not be original. The left headlight ring is missing. I have 2 Studebaker hubcaps but not original. The frame over the rear axle was weak and has been "fish plated." A rear homemade trailer hitch has been added...The new Allstate 600x16 tires I put on the truck went flat so I had some used radial tires installed...Four of the suds on the rear wheel broke off when we changed tires...As seen in the pictures I have a used grille section that I bought years ago. DO NOT ASSUME anything about this truck that is not listed above or in the pictures...If you have any doubts, contact me before you bid....I have 100% feedback and I want to maintain just that... As I recall the speedometer worked, if so it reads about 62380 miles....We have a forklift and facilities at our shop to load the truck for transport... An immediate deposit of $1000 via PayPal is required upon close of the auction and the balance due in cash or certified check upon pickup of the vehicle.....We will give you a bill of sale, no California title is available.... I have listed a 1957 Chevrolet 1/2 ton pickup on eBay also......Good Luck Bidding!!!!!!!!!
