Vehicle Detail
My wife has decided to sell her 1960 Metropolitan, Ms. Met. We just love projects and now that there is nothing left to do to this car but enjoy her my wife wants a new challenge. This little lady started life as a black and white hardtop, and was restored in the early 2000’s in Washington State by a long time Metropolitan aficionado to the colors Pink and white. The new owner wanted to use her in support of breast cancer research and in that role she had seen some paint and interior wear by the time we took possession. We acquired Ms. Met about 2 years ago and had her shipped down south to the Atlanta area. After we took delivery she was treated to a new coat of paint, she was found to be all metal; no bondo had been used on this car and car has no rust. All of her stainless trim was sent off to be professionally polished and all of her chrome was redone at the same time, even the rear view mirror has been chrome plated. A complete new interior that followed the famous 1960 Metropolitan show car the Fifth Avenue was created and installed (except I had black carpet installed instead of the pink carpet AMC used), along with a new headliner and new sun visors as well. Around the inside of the back window I used chrome trim instead of the metal 3 piece garnish that normally comes on the car, I wanted a little more pop there. I do have a set of original metal trim that will go with the car. All of the original glass is in good shape; all new weather stripping was added to the entire car. Her old AM radio was sent off to California to have it converted to Am/FM with rca inputs for plugging in your Ipod or similar, radio looks completely stock. When the car was being painted the engine was taken out and found to be in great condition, it is a 1500 but an earlier one then would have been in the 1960 car. The transmission was found to be in great working order as well. Engine purrs like a kitten, the car starts with almost a snap of your finger, you have to listen hard to hear the engine running. Transmission shifts smoothly, the radiator was taken to a shop to be checked over, it was then cleaned and sealed. A new exhaust system was installed from manifold to exhaust tip. Exhaust manifold and intake manifold were powder coated. A complete new, period correct wire harness (with cloth covered wire) was installed along with new headlights and tail light lenses. All gauges work (a new speedometer was installed), the only item not working is the heater switch, needs to be re-built or replaced but I never used the car in the winter so I never got around to that as they have been out of stock for a while. **** 8/2--I just had an email from Metropolitan Restoration Services in PA that new heater switches should be available in a week, I have ordered one and it will go with the car.**** The period correct Firestone tires are in excellent shape, hub caps are new. I took the car to a long time AMC mechanic to check over the suspension and brakes, brakes are in fine condition (all drum of course, manual). The rear leaf springs were taken off and new bushings installed as well as new shocks on all 4 corners. Undercarriage was detailed, new gas tank, gas lines and break lines were installed as well as a new battery box. A correct flying lady hood ornament (they were a dealer offered item back when Mets were new) was installed, and the attention that it draws at the concours shows this Met has attended is unbelievable. I bet over 500 pictures have been taken of the hood ornament alone in the 3 concours shows we have attended. If you look at the additional pictures here you will see a few at the Ault Park Concours where there are people looking at Ms. Met but ignoring the Ferraris parked in front of her!! She is a real chick magnet!! http://s1071.photobucket.com/albums/u508/mypinkmetro/?albumview=slideshow Forgot to take it out for picture but jack bag in trunk contains correct jack and lug wrench. I did not have a lift so I took some undercarriage pictures the best I could, car is low. You will see some spots of undercoating that was once on the car here and there in those pictures. Mileage shows on the odometer as 1,675 but I put in a new one when we did the restoration, there is a picture on the slide show of the old speedometer and it shows 57,284 miles, but as will all antique cars the paperwork from the DMV shows it as a mileage exempt vehicle due to age. Besides the heater switch need to be fixed the only other problem is the passenger door needs to have the door hinges (see picture of passenger door) adjusted. It is such a common problem with Mets that the first bulletin listed with the MOCNA (Met owners club) is Mr. Met #1 bulletin on how to do adjust the doors. I also picked up a set of new door hinges but I have not tried to take off the door as I am not sure I can do it myself due to my current physical limitations. The door does not bother me, it has been like that since I got the car but I do have the new hinges for you to make that fix. Upon her completion in October of 2011 she attended the American Motors Owners Southeast Regional show where she was named “Best of Show”, two weeks later she was invited to the Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance where she was honored with a Palmetto Award in the micro car class. In June of 2012 she traveled to Cincinnati to the Ault Park Concours where she earned an “Award of Distinction” from the judges. Also in June she traveled to Shelbyville, TN to the Metropolitan Owners Club of North America regional show that was held in conjunction with the AACA Grand National show, where she was awarded first place in her class. Just this past weekend (July 21st) she was on the show field of the Keneeland Concours in Lexington, KY with 8 other perfect cars but for the first time she did not take an award as that show is a 100% stock point show and she has had a color change. You can see her on the awards page of the Hilton Head show here, in the micro car class http://www.hhiconcours.com/gallery/2011-concours-delegance-winners.html And here on the Ault Park awards page http://ohioconcours.com/carsbyclass.asp?txt_year=2012&txt_class=CA&txt_classname=Collector If you pick up or arrange pick up I will also include a spare engine on an engine stand. I had gotten some parts from a technical college that Met parts were given to, I used some of the trim but put the few others on eBay for sale and a guy over in NC bought them. Instead of the money he owed me traded me an engine, 2 transmissions and a few other parts instead (he was making a resto rod met and did not need the drivetrains, he just wanted them out of his garage) so I got them instead of the $25 he was going to pay me for the e-bay sale—that was a deal!! I doubt if I could get the engine onto my trailer if I deliver so I will toss it in if you pick up. I am sure I have some other spare parts lying around that I will include. I am also including the pink bag used to hold the cleaning supplies at shows, a pink cooler and a white fire extinguisher with a custom snuggie with embroidered AMC logo in pink!! All of these items were created for the car to be used in the shows and I want them to remain with her. While the car has always been garaged I have 2 car covers that are included, one is a lightweight one I used when I hauled the car in my enclosed trailer to keep the dust off. The other is a normal car cover that I kept on her when she was in the garage. I am sure I have some other parts like spare side glass and other things that I got from that tech college that I held onto, they will be yours. Car is sold with a bill of sale, no title. Older cars in Georgia are title exempt and I just went down to the tag office and was told that you cannot obtain a title for an older car, just a Georgia Motor vehicle title information page which shows the car as a non-titled vehicle on State of Georgia letter head. In the pictures you can see the new data plates, I had a new one made showing the pink paint code as SPEC, that is what AMC used when then did a special paint. The old data plate is included (see picture). The VIN data plate is pop riveted in instead of the screws normally found. When I got the car the local sheriff’s office had to verify the VIN to issue a registration and they insisted it had to be riveted, not screwed. To be pure you can just remove the rivets and uses screws if you want to. I really would like the potential buyer to come see the car before making a final bid. I have, in the past, purchased a car sight unseen and have not been 100% happy, I want you to be happy with this car so please come see her first or have your representative do so. We are about one hour north of Atlanta, GA in the Ellijay, GA area. Delivery may be possible up to a 400 mile distance at a cost of $1.00 a mile (I have an enclosed trailer) or I can assist your delivery company with loading this little treasure (I would suggest enclosed transportation to keep her secure). A deposit via paypal of $500.00 will be required within 48 hours of auction end. Payment may be made via bank check, wire transfer, money order or cash, checks, money orders and transfers will need to be cleared or verified before delivery. Any questions, requests, or concerns please contact me through e-bay. Thanks for looking. As she is a 52 year old car, Ms. Met is sold "AS IS" and with no warranties expressed or implied
