This 1967 Fairlane 500 brings a mid-sized package with a serious punch under the hood in the form of a built 289. If a Mustang is a little small for your needs, perhaps this cool red hardtop is more to your liking. Doing battle with the Chevy Chevelle has hardened this Fairlane 500 into a lean, mean street machine, and the bright red war paint it wears suggests that it isn’t going to live in anyone’s shadow. Of course, it’s easy to swagger when you look this good, with straight bodywork, sharply defined character lines, and neatly-fitted panels. Bright red isn’t subtle, but that isn’t this car’s purpose and it has the hardware to back up the look. The fastback roofline was a big hit on the NASCAR circles, and the forward-canted headlights give it the illusion of motion even when it’s standing still. Other subtle details include the body-color bumpers, smoked taillight lenses, and a set of ‘289’ badges on the front fenders that hint at what lives under the hood. The interior is less than a year old and looks awesome in red instead of the more common black. With original bench seats front and rear, it perfectly captures the period using authentic materials and patterns, and it’s every bit as comfortable today as it was when it was new. There are also new carpets on the floor, fresh door panels that give the Fairlane an upscale look, and a fresh dash pad. The original gauges amount to a speedometer and fuel gauge, so a Sunpro tach was fitted to the column, but hidden down low and out of sight, while a trio of auxiliary gauges was installed just ahead of the shifter where they’re keeping an eye on the hot 289 under the hood. The transmission features a reverse valve body controlled by a B&M shifter mounted to the transmission tunnel, but you can see this car’s intentions with the original AM radio still in the dash. As I mentioned, the 289 under the hood is ready for battle, thanks to aluminum heads and a pump-gas-friendly 10:1 compression ratio. With a 4-barrel carburetor and a set of long-tube headers in place, it cranks out a VERY impressive 405 horsepower, making this one over-achieving small block. Bright Ford Blue paint looks correct in the Fairlane engine bay, augmented by chrome details and new plug wires. Up front, an aluminum radiator keeps it cool under virtually any conditions, and the ignition system offers a few upgrades of its own. A TCI C4 3-speed automatic is up to the challenge, with lightning-quick shifts and capable of taking a beating, and feeds a 9-inch full of easy-cruising 3.00 gears. Polished Torque Thrust wheels are always a hit on ‘60s muscle, and these wear relatively recent BFGoodrich radials. Unusual, fast, and striking, this Fairlane is a great alternative to the regular muscle you see at all the shows.
