Perhaps the design has aged better than most, or perhaps it’s the very notoriety that gave them their reputation that makes them so highly sought today. Either way, this 1958 Ranger is a stunning example. Truly, there’s no mistaking an Edsel for anything else, but looking at it from today’s perspective, you’re faced by a handsome ‘50s cruiser with a crisp two-tone paint scheme. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that someone threw a massively expensive frame-off restoration at this one, and the result is one of the cleanest ‘50s cars we’ve ever featured. The four-door hardtop body cleverly disguises its family car origins and cuts a sleek profile, and the wedge of white framed by bright stainless trim gives it the look of always being in motion. Paint and bodywork are exemplary, finished to show standards, and simply spectacular in every way. The finish is deep, the fit and finish are excellent, and this car might make you fall in love with an Edsel, even against your will. All of the chrome has been restored, including the trademark Edsel grille and massive wrap-around bumpers fore and aft. Inside, the interior has been restored to stock specifications. Legroom expansive, and with the hardtop body style, it’s bright and airy inside. The black and white upholstery is new, and features silver details that add a lot of interest in that uniquely ‘50s way. The pushbutton automatic in the center of the steering wheel is fully operational, the gauges were clearly inspired by the jet-age, and it carries options like a heater and AM radio. Fresh carpets and a set of beautiful tri-tone door panels only emphasize that the Edsel is a far nicer car than you may have expected. The trunk is truly massive, and includes an original style mat and full-sized spare. The Edsel also got a 361 cubic inch V8 whose torque rating of 400 foot-pounds is proudly worn on the valve covers. The engine bay is largely original, and by the looks of things, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that the mileage shown is authentic. There are signs of regular maintenance, and this engine has a reputation as one of Ford’s better designs, with great torque and the reliability of an anvil. It pulls the big Edsel down the road effortlessly at 75 MPH. It also includes power steering and power brakes, so it’s a pleasure to drive, and the special automatic transmission shifts as it should. Out back, a recently rebuilt Ford 9-inch rear has been fitted, and a new dual exhaust system installed. Correct wide whites with spinner hubcaps finish off this awesome ‘50s legend. This car also includes a ton of paperwork, including manuals, promotional materials, and sales documents. Forget the past, when you drive an Edsel, you won’t want anything else.
