This car was significant as it was the final incarnation of the air-cooled 911, introduced in 1964. The 993 was the first Porsche to debut variable-length intake runners with the "Varioram" system on 1996 models. This addressed the inherent compromise between high-RPM power production and low-RPM torque production, and was one of the first of its kind to be employed on production vehicles. Along with the revised bodywork, mechanically the 993 also featured an all-new multilink rear suspension that improved the car's ride and handling. This rear suspension was largely derived from the stillborn Porsche 989's rear multilink design, and served to rectify the problems with earlier models' tendency to oversteer if the throttle or brakes were applied mid-corner. These modifications also reduced previous 911's lift-off oversteer problems to a much more moderate degree.The rare Targa open-topped model also made a return, this time with a large glass roof that slid under the rear window. The expensive air-cooled 993 Targa had a limited release between 1996 and 1998. This system was a complete redesign, as previous Targa models had a removable roof section and a wide B-pillar functioning as a roll bar. The new glass roof design allowed the 993 Targa to retain the same side-on profile as the other 911 Carrera variants and finished with the inconvenience of storing the removed top of the old system. The Targa has the body of the convertible with the Targa glass roof replacing the fabric roof. The Targa was equipped with distinctive 2-piece 17-inch wheels, which could be ordered as an option on all cars not having standard 18-inch wheels. Production of these US bound Targa’s was only 1,276 in 1997 making this one of the rarest ’97 993’s in existence. The car you see here is a true, 2 owner, 35,000 original mile 1997 Porsche 911 Targa that is in wonderful condition. The car has been owned by two incredibly detailed gentleman who have kept more books, records, Porsche Boutique catalogs, email and post it notes about the car then you would ever imagine. From spare key’s to Porsche VHS tapes to state inspection emails confirming appointments, the car has everything and then some more in two large binders. The car was just serviced in January of 2012 at a cost of over $1,600. Work included a new engine oil cooler fan, center brake light, A/C condenser blower fan and a few other small fixes to bring the car up to 100%. The paint on the car is wonderful condition and shows no major scratches or dings. The front and rear bumpers are both in great shape with no major rock chips showing or damage. Even under the front bumper is in good condition with no major damage. All of the glass is in good condition with no chips or cracks. The one piece glass targa operates as it should as well as the shade. Both are power and function with a flick of a switch. Inside, the black leather seats are in great, original condition with no major wear. There is some normal wear to the bolsters but nothing major or tearing is present. The dash is solid and all gauges are in good working order. The radio is the stock system and works with no problems. Carpet and door panels are both in great condition with no major wear. Turn the key and the flat six comes to life and runs great. Connected to the tiptronic transmission, the car is a joy to drive, controlling shifts from the steering wheel. The wheels are in good overall condition but do show some minor wear. The tires are in good condition with good tread life left on them. Under the front bonnet, you will find the space saver spare and full tool roll. Vin number is WP0DA2995VS385093 and the current mileage shows 35,540 which is original for the car. The car comes with a clean Autocheck and shows, with the title, that the previous owner has had the car since January or 2000 when the car showed only 7,900 miles.
