Why not have both? The VW microbus is one of the most versatile vehicles ever invented, but never was it so useful as when Westfalia converted it to a home on wheels. With a new engine and super clean bodywork, this VW is ready to go anywhere and brings a bit of civilization with it. Instantly recognizable, this 1978 VW Westfalia camper is incredibly straight, hailing from the warm dry south. If you’ve been paying attention, these are slowly creeping up in value, as collectors realize that they’ll never see anything like this again, especially with the clever pop-up roof that houses additional sleeping quarters. The paint is subtle, but very well done, with a great shine over bodywork. Two-tone paint gives it tidy proportions, but there’s no hiding the fact that this box on wheels was designed to maximize interior space and comfort. You’ll also note exterior hook-ups for city water and electric, offering additional flexibility in more civilized campgrounds. The interior is where this bus truly sparkles. The Westfalia conversion is incredibly complete, not only featuring the pop-up roof, but a second double bed in back, a functioning sink, a 2-burner stove with on-board propane tanks, a gas/electric refrigerator, and even a clothes closet neatly integrated into the design. Design is a cool combination of 1970s kitsch and German efficiency, with funky plaid fabrics and no-nonsense hardware throughout. Up front, instrumentation is basic, with just a speedometer and fuel level gauge, and the driving position is, well, bus-like, but that’s all part of the charm. The 4-speed manual transmission shifts well once you realize that the linkage is about 10 feet long, and it was actually designed for long-distance travel so the seats are remarkably comfortable. The engine is a newer Type IV flat-four, which VW traditionalists will appreciate. Delivering a modest upgrade in horsepower thanks to dual carburetors, it cruises nicely at highway speeds, and will unquestionably get you anywhere you’d care to go. It shows signs of lots of recent work, and runs beautifully, with that characteristic VW whistle. Front disc brakes are a nice safety feature when you’re hauling a bit of extra weight back there, and it also seems to offer fresh CV joints and mufflers. The original steel wheels have been refinished and wear a fresh coat of contrasting cream paint, as well as a set of narrow whitewall 185/75/14 Michelin radials. There’s a surprisingly strong market for these wonderful vehicles, and not just among those who used to follow the Grateful Dead around the country. A super-clean example that will still take you camping in comfort.
