Vehicle Detail

Look at the pictures., This car brings smiles wherever it is driven. FORD Falcons are becoming the NEXT BIG THING in collector cars. They are relatively affordable, easy to work on, economical to own, and just plain COOL… Our family has restored Thunderbirds and old F-100s, and we were eager to find a Falcon to work on, especially the first year Futura pillarless Hardtop. When we heard about this Falcon in Santa Monica , we believed it would be a great project car. It was built in California. We found that it was an original, “black plate”, California Falcon, and the historical black plates will come with the car as part of the package. It is currently licensed, registered, and insured, and the title is of course clear. We have enjoyed renewing this car. It has become my son’s “daily driver”, and it is reliable and fun and gets attention wherever he goes. Meanwhile we have had fun. If you look closely you will see everything. Literally. My son and I were sick and tired of buying cars to restore and being told all sorts of things that were not true. So this time, while preparing to repaint the car, we decided to strip down both the exterior and interior. It was an incredible amount of work, of course. My son used a pneumatic needle chisel to strip the interior floors and reveal whatever work was needed to the floorpan and trunk and fenders, etc. The entire exterior was stripped of primer and we were impressed to find a really solid car underneath. There was a big patch panel on the right rear lower fender. Never having stripped an entire car to “bare metal”, we were fascinated with its appearance. We postponed repainting it the original “Corinthian White” or the correct Ford red that would match my personal 1961 TBird. Rather than do anything more to fill things or prime, we covered the entire car with “clearcoat” for protection and the fun of it. We have decided to sell the car just as it is. Yes, this is truly a car that just what it appears to be, and what you see is what you get. No hidden rust or hidden damage or questions about what will be needed in the future. Meanwhile, we love the look and the attention the car now receives, and if we kept the car we would not paint it further. To best of our knowledge, we also have all the bits and pieces to complete the restoration, with the exception of the headliner. If something is not now mounted on the car, we have the original parts or we have purchased new replacements, such as dash knobs, and we have some “extras”. There are some period accessory mirrors. We are including a pair of Galaxie rear lenses that people used to adapt for a more “slick” look because of their curve. The car is ready for you to drive as is or repaint or finish any way you want, WHILE YOU DRIVE IT EVERY DAY. We drive it as you see it, usually with the rear seat installed. The upholstery is serviceable, and the carpet is decent and needs cleaning. The dash is remarkably free of cracks…ooops, I forgot…it’s all steel, not plastic. And, in about 10 minutes you can remove the carpet and rear seat and deck. The pictures show this, which allows you to see the floor panels that have been chiseled clean and are ready for repair. Both the interior and trunk are ready for the proper metalwork whenever you decide. . The correct 170 cubic inch six cylinder engine is now one out of a 1965 Mustang, which is also the source of the upgraded C-4 three speed Ford automatic transmission. That nice little motor was rebuilt previously, and we literally just had the transmission professionally rebuilt by our local expert who has rebuilt others for our TBird and GTO. It runs smooth and strong for a 170. The transmission and mounts, and related modifications [from a two speed to a three speed] cost over $2000. Looking again at the pictures, other new parts include the heater core, heater plenum, cables for heater control, recent tires, interior knobs, fender skirts, and horn. The car has received the “station wagon” 14 inch wheels. As you can see, we have an “excellent” set of correct 14 inch wire wheel covers [alone worth over $300 in this condition] from that period, and we have alternated that “look” with dog dishes and trim rings for variety. ALL are included, plus three good 13 inch wire wheel covers, in case you want to return to 13 inchers. The exhaust system is also new, including muffler and piping, and the sound is excellent. The electrics all work, although we just noticed that the right turn signal is inconsistent. This Futura starts right up, the engine is tight with no smoking, and the brakes were checked and work great. The windshield is solid and safe, but it does have some scratches and imperfections. The mileage is obviously not accurate. We are including a spare wheel with a tire that holds air, but we found out that the “offset” is wrong. When the previous owner put on the 14 inch wheels, he put one inch blocks on the rear springs and shorter coils on the front, creating a classic “rake”. We like the look. However, we located and are including a set of proper standard coils, so that you can easily return the car to its original ride height. You might then want to replace the shocks. We are including the original radio, but we have never tried to reinstall it. There is a new antenna. Some of the rubbers and window seals need replacing. We have some seals and such, as you can see in the pictures, too. The white tires are Atlas “port-o-walls”; one was torn on a curb; they are easily available, and we did not replace the one because we leave it up to you if you want that wide style or not. The tires have their own narrow white sides turned inward. This is a car with no surprises, especially since you can literally SEE everything about it. Remember, right now the finish is bare metal with a clear coat over it. You get to decide what you might want to do from here, if anything. We think the existing factory flaws and the old repairs are fascinating. I never knew what an old car like this looked like from the factory before it was primed and painted…rather interesting, in fact…and everyone we meet seems to love it and wish they had the opportunity to do this with their own car. You can see that lots of other valuable parts come with the car, including new door and back side panels that have never been on the car. Everything you see [plus the three additional wire wheel covers] are part of the entire package when you buy the car. Before anyone asks, we will NOT sell any of the standard or extra parts separately. The new owner receives everything. We have thousands of dollars of work and expense, and many hours of effort, in this car. However, this is a family hobby and we know we never recoup our material investment. Again, the new owner will benefit from everything we have paid for and done. This really wonderful car is for sale as is and where is, and only to persons in the continental United States. No warranty or guarantees are expressed or implied. You are entirely responsible for pickup or shipping. We will do our best to cooperate with your shipper and, if needed, we will hold the car on our property for a maximum of two weeks from the time of the completion of the auction. Do not hesitate to ask questions. The pictures are pretty good, and show you what you will receive. We will gladly clarify anything that you still may want to know.
