RK Motors Charlotte 5527 Lakeview Road, Charlotte, NC, 28269, US Phone : (704) 596-5211 Email : information@RKMotorsCharlotte.com Frame Off Restored Chevelle Super Sport 396 4 Speed During the 60s, Chevrolet produced one out of every 10 cars sold in the United States; and naturally, the division was more concerned about keeping up with demand than meticulous documentation. Since the Super Sport treatment was often an options package instead of an actual trim code, this lead to many models with ambiguous numbers that are exceptionally hard to prove. Not surprisingly, when we drive a new Chevrolet Super Sport into our RK Motors Charlotte showroom, the first question we usually get is; "Do you know if it's a real SS?" And fortunately with cars like this freshly restored 1967 Chevelle SS396, which were coded from the factory with SS-specific cowl tags and VIN numbers, our answer is a resounding YES! As the recipient of a top-notch frame-off restoration, this '67 Chevelle Super Sport has all the right big block, 4-speed hardware which is branded with all the right casting numbers and stamp sequences to create a highly desirable, investment grade muscle car! To confirm this 1967 Chevelle is an authentic SS396 car, I'll go ahead and decode both its VIN and cowl tag: VIN: 138177B1963011: Chevrolet38: SS39617: 2-door sport coupe7: 1967 model yearB: Assembled at GMs Baltimore, Maryland facility196307: Sequential production number COWL TAG:05B Assembled during the second (B) week of May (05) 1967454 Job number from build sheet067 1967 model year13817 Chevelle SS sport coupeBAL Manufactured at GMs Baltimore, Maryland facility9277 Factory unit number731 Medium Bright Blue vinyl interior with bucket seatsF Bright Blue lower paintF Bright Blue upper paint198735 Identification number from build sheet1 Final inspection stamp Assembled at GM's Baltimore, Maryland manufacturing facility in May of 1967, this real deal SS396 Chevelle wears a straight and solid steel body under a cool coat of correct GM code F Bright Blue paint. During an extensive, and fully documented, nut and bolt restoration the car was completely disassembled, placed on a rotisserie to ensure maximum straightness, and expertly detailed to provide a show winning body which displays better than factory panel alignment throughout. Once the body was fully prepped, layers of Bright Blue paint were applied, extensively color sanded and topped with a thick clearcoat shell that has been thoroughly buffed to the excellent shine you see today. Presently, this Chevelle is much, much nicer than any mass produced original car from the 1960s; and it carries a super clean finish on top of a high quality restoration that is simply stunning. At the front of the car, clear T3 headlights flank a Super Sport exclusive blacked out grille which centers a prominent "SS396" emblem between bars that look as straight as the day they left the showroom floor. At the bottom of that grille, a new chrome bumper is equipped with bright amber parking lights; and at the top of that grille, a showroom fresh "Chevelle" script occupies the header panel of a Super Sport exclusive twin scoop hood. At the sides of the car, "396" cross flag emblems combine with rear mounted "Super Sport" scripts to hint at the true nature of the big blocks personality while new chrome door handles and a chrome driver's side mirror perfectly complement stainless wheel well trim and Super Sport exclusive ribbed rocker moldings. At the top of the car, new stainless trim traces new date code correct windows, between new stainless windshield wipers and great looking chrome drip rails which add a nice finished look. And at the rear of the car, a Super Sport exclusive black rear valence hangs pristine tail lights over a showroom fresh chrome bumper and crystal clear reverse lamps. Glance under this Chevelles mirror-slick blue hood and you'll find the cars original 396 cubic inch L35 big block V8. Branded with a 1967 exclusive 3902406 casting number, a correct 7B196307 partial VIN and a correct "ED" suffix stamp, this legendary Chevrolet engine utilizes a forged steel crank, hydraulic lifters and oval port closed chamber heads to turn a stout 10.25 to 1 compression ratio into 325 horsepower. At the top of the motor, a black and chrome single snorkel air filter, which is topped by a pristine 396 Turbo-Jet decal, feeds air into a correct 4-barrel Quadrajet carburetor that slurps fuel through new stainless fuel lines. That air/fuel mixture travels into a correct cast iron intake manifold which sits between correct cast iron heads that wear 3904390 casting numbers, an August (H) 31st (31) of 1966 (6) driver's date code, and an August (H) 30th (30) of 1966 (6) passenger's date code. At the bottom of those heads, fully restored cast iron exhaust manifolds send spent gases into a true dual exhaust system; and at the top of those heads, chrome valve covers add a little bit of form to a whole lot of function. Fire is provided by an HEI distributor which sends spark through MSD Street Fire wires. And cooling is provided by an aluminum radiator which sends water through correct reproduction hoses and correct tower clamps. The quick spinning, big block is covered in a traditional coat of Chevy Orange paint that contrasts well to the cars powder coated inner fenders and radiator support. And everything under the hood has been completely show detailed from the correctly tagged Delco Energizer battery and correct power steering to the freshly insulated hood and gray hood springs. What good would a killer big block be without a great chassis and suspension to back it up? Behind the thundering 396, the cars original M21 Muncie 4-speed transmission, which wears a correct 3885010 casting number, a May 11th (P0511) build stamp, and a correct 7B196307 partial VIN, sends power to a tried and true 12 bolt Posi-traction rear end with stout 3.73 gears. That strip-ready drivetrain is held off the ground by a correctly rebuilt suspension which features fresh shocks, correct power disc and drum brakes and correct power steering. In the middle of the car, a mandrel bent, reproduction exhaust system runs from the cars restored GM manifolds under a Bengal Silver powder coated transmission cross member to factory replacement mufflers; and fresh stainless fuel lines run from a new stainless fuel tank to the big Quadrajet carburetor. The bottom of this Chevelle has been over-restored to the same high standards as its exterior panels and engine compartment. Accordingly, the frame was sanded and completely repainted gloss black, the floors were layered in Bright Blue basecoat/clearcoat, and a slew of correctly finished components detail the car from front to back. To complete the look, 15 inch steel rally wheels were powder coated in Bengal Silver, sealed in a thick clearcoat shell and fitted with pristine turbine center caps, traditional stainless trim rings and fresh 255/60 BF Goodrich Radial T/As. During its frame-off restoration, this Chevelle SS was equipped with a great looking Medium Bright Blue vinyl interior which is 100% correct and presents as brand new. The front bucket and rear bench seats are in excellent shape and show little to no signs of wear, and the upper dash exhibits no fading or warping at all. In the middle of the dash, you'll find a direct fit Custom Autosound radio that's bordered by new chrome trim and SS396 exclusive black crinkle finish; and below the dash you'll find a correct blue console that props a fully functioning clock in front of a correct chrome shifter. At the bottom of the car, "Chevelle" branded floor mats protect like-new blue carpet that anchors Deluxe Fisher branded lap belts. And at the top of the car, a tight, fade-free headliner hangs blue sun visors in front of a fully functional dome light. At the sides of the seats, horizontally pleated door panels are free of nicks and feature bright chrome handles and correct blue armrests inside of pristine stainless trim. And in front of the driver, a spectacular looking GM rally wheel features a bright wood rim, spotless satin spokes and a vivid red, white and blue horn button. At the back of the cockpit, a center mounted SPL speaker hangs in a straight package tray above a fully restored trunk which features a correct houndstooth mat, correct decklid decals, a correct jack and a full size spare tire. Documentation for this Chevelle includes a reproduction owner's manual, a stack of restoration photos and a manual for the cars aftermarket sound system. With a stunning motor, an incredible paint job and a pristine interior, this real deal SS396 Chevelle is a rare, investment grade muscle car that is better than new in every way thanks to a high dollar restoration. And best of all, it's a unique first generation GM A-body that isn't nearly as prevalent as the more famous, and too often duplicated, second generation SS454. If you're in the market for a no excuses show piece with an unbeatable combination of style and performance, this '67 Super Sport is your kind of car!
