Restored by the owner of a top-flight restoration shop for his own personal use, it has just under 1000 miles in the two years since it was completed and has already started collecting a substantial pile of trophies. The best color on the best year done to exacting standards? Yes, please! There’s no better car to capture the attitude of the late ‘60s than a Charger R/T. Big, bad, and black, this incredible hardtop was built with a Pro-Touring attitude and old-fashioned craftsmanship. To make a statement, the bodywork was refinished to standards that go beyond “show”. It’s clear that they were shooting for perfection. Those massive quarter panels are so smooth and straight you can use them as a mirror, the gaps are so even that it would easily pass the Lexus “ball bearing” test, and the paint is so deep it’s almost like you could dive in and swim around in the hood. And the orange stripe out back only enhances the nose-down attitude and predatory personality. What little chrome there is on an R/T was restored to show standards as well, and all the original badges were replaced. Park a set of Magnums at the corners and you could almost pass this one off as a concours piece ready for the Mopar Nationals. As shockingly good as the exterior is, you’ll see that great care was given to the interior as well. The seats wear exact reproduction seat covers, the center console offers fresh wood appliques, and the dash full of original instruments—including a Tic-Toc-Tach—has been restored to a high quality, and a factory correct look. The original wheel still guides the front end, but the stereo system got a big upgrade in the form of a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo head unit that works hard to overcome the thumping big block under the hood. It’s been driven, but there’s really no evidence of it inside, where every surface and component is factory fresh and beautifully preserved. The stock look continues under hood where a 440 cubic inch mill lives, drenched in brilliant Hemi Orange paint. With a simple 4-barrel carburetor, it thumps out substantially more horsepower than a stock Charger, yet remains docile enough to drive every day. Finish work is, as you’d expect, first-rate, with expert paint, beautifully prepped inner fenders, and carefully routed wires and hoses. It’s stock, but the time it must have taken to make it look this good is mind-boggling. In fact, we have restoration pictures, available on request, which document the top-notch rotisserie treatment this car received. Underneath, the floors are finished like the body, there’s a Flowmaster dual exhaust system, and a quick-witted TorqueFlite handles the gear changes. Adjustable torsion bars give it that aggressive stance, and the giant 18-inch aluminum hoops wearing low-profile rubber certainly doesn’t hurt. Savagely fast, and incredibly beautiful, this is one of those cars that was built for love, not for money. It’s simply awesome in every measurable way.
