GM is famous for trying to create "special editions" using nothing more than clever packaging, but nothing could be further from the truth in this case. Designed as a separate model between the base Corvette and the Z06, it effectively takes the popular high-performance Z51 suspension package and builds upon it, creating a vastly improved car that looks completely unique. Everything that was awesome about the Z51 package remains, and the Grand Sport adds some seriously cool hardware to help distinguish it from garden-variety base Corvettes. The first thing you notice is unique bodywork, including a wider Z06-style front fascia with a Z06 lower lip spoiler, as well as the scoop on the nose. Z06-width front fenders replace the stock Vette's, and there's a Grand Sport badge affixed above dual vertical gills. The rear fenders have been replaced with Z06 units with functional brake cooling ducts. You can have your Grand Sport in any available Corvette color as well as all four different available trim levels. A heritage package is also available, adding a pair of dual stripes on the front fenders in either silver or red. Best of all, the Grand Sport is available as a convertible, something that can't be said of the track-ready Z06. This showroom-fresh 2010 Grand Sport 3LT convertible has just 1,428 actual miles, so it's safe to assume that it is as-new in almost every imaginable way. In addition to the extensive list of standard features, this was a custom-ordered car in which the original buyer specified almost every option you could get on a Grand Sport. Here's a breakdown of the window sticker and options: Base Grand Sport Convertible: $58,580.00 3LT preferred equipment package (includes Bose 7-speaker stereo, XM satellite radio, Heads-up display, power telescoping wheel, heated seats, memory package, universal home remote, adjustable sport seats, power passenger seat, cargo net, Bluetooth connectivity, and a power convertible top): $6200.00 Chrome aluminum wheels: $1995.00 Navigation system: $1750.00 6-speed automatic transmission: $1250.00 Dual mode exhaust system: $1195.00 Crossed-flag seat trim: $300.00 Headrest embroidery: N/C Beautiful black paint shows you just how far GM paint technology has come from the days of multi-colored 1970s fiberglass this car is so black, it seems to absorb light. Gaps are excellent, and there's nary a mark anywhere on the car. The handful of miles that it has been driven was on sunny days in a dry climate, and it's unlikely that this car has ever seen rain or anything more aggressive than a soft cloth against its finish. One of the only options this car doesn't carry is the heritage package, which, ironically, was a decal kit that added a pair of hash marks on the front fender. They don't make the car faster, and given how sinister this one looks, they won't be missed. The Grand Sport is powered by the base Corvette 6.2-liter LS3 V8, which is certainly no slouch in the performance department. Making 430 horsepower and 424 pounds of torque, it's a thrilling companion and reminds us just how far performance cars have come in the past few years even the mighty ZR1 with its 32 valve all-aluminum LT5 powerplant only managed a peak of 405 horsepower. The engine bay is tidy and clean, again, virtually as new. There's a lot of black plastic, including the intake manifold and matching coil covers with Corvette LS3 emblazoned on them in red. It fires up instantly and runs perfectly thanks to the wonders of modern technology (no 427/435 ever idled this beautifully), and the sound of the LS3 V8 will send chills down your spine. It will be difficult to restrain yourself from burying the throttle every chance you get just to listen to the sonorous engine note, never mind the neck-snapping acceleration. The six-speed automatic brings a custom gear ratio in the rear differential that's specific to the Grand Sport, as well as paddle shifters on the steering wheel for lightning-fast manual shifts. The real performance upgrades to the Grand Sport are in the chassis. Those wider fenders cover up some additional Z06 hardware, including brakes, suspension and rolling stock. The optional $1195 dual-mode exhaust system ups the power output to 436 horsepower and 428 pounds of torque, and is thrilling to hear. The Grand Sport's calipers are distinguished by their silver with red lettering and the rotors have been enlarged to Z06-specifications with 14-inch rotors and six-piston calipers up front and 13.4-inch rotors with four-piston calipers in the rear. Revised shock and spring settings differentiate the Grand Sport from base corvettes, and it features heavy-duty sway bars. The 2010 Grand Sport rides on unique 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels wrapped in sticky 275/35ZR18 front and 325/30ZR19 rear tires. Those special wheels are usually painted silver, but this car carries the $1995 optional chrome wheels, which are dazzling against the black paint. All this upgraded equipment enables cornering capability of 1.0 g, as well as a 0.2-second improvement in 0-60 acceleration versus the standard LS3-powered models. Corvette designers have heard the complaints from the car magazines, and have been working hard to upgrade the Corvettes interior fittings, culminating with the Grand Sports beautifully finished black leather buckets. Aggressive enough to hold you in place during spirited driving, they're also all-day comfortable for cross-country touring. Thanks to the six-speed transmission, high-speed cruising is a pleasure, the LS3 settles into a muted, distant rumble, and fuel mileage hovers in the mid-20s, which is astounding for a car with this kind of performance. The black canvas top stows quickly and easily at the touch of a button, and the trunk is as-new. Documentation is what you would expect from your new Corvette. We have the original window sticker (with a MSRP of $72,220!), original owner's manuals, DVD system manual, EPA stickers, and OnStar information, which is current. Look again at the price on the window sticker, then at the asking price, and then go down to your Chevy dealer and try to buy a loaded black-on-black Grand Sport convertible for less. Identical in appearance and condition to a new 2012 Grand Sport, there's just no reason not to buy this one if you're in the market. More than just a badge-engineering job, the Grand Sport is an entirely new model that neatly splits the difference between a base Corvette and the monster Z06. With almost every available option, including many that you just can't get in a Z06 (like the convertible top and an automatic transmission), this car delivers astounding performance and a surprising amount of luxury. We can't guarantee future collectability, but looking at the numbers, this one is a much better bet than a standard Corvette for not a lot more money. But if I were you, I'd just get in and drive and let history take care of itself. Call now!
