Vehicle Detail
We purchased this 1974 BMW 2002 a few days ago from Knoxville, TN. After picking it up and driving home (Louisville, KY) we decided it was not what we were looking for. The seller was not honest about the condition and it is more of a project than we want right now as we are just finishing up the purchase of a house that will require our time. So let's start with all the issues I know about. Odometer does not work. States 42K - title says that is accurate, but it isn't. The seller didn't disclose this fact and represented it as working so I have no idea about actual mileage. The hazard switch is broken. I've ordered a new switch and will install as soon as it arrives. With it replaced the turn indicators all work correctly. Horn does not work. Rust bubbles in multiple locations. The most serious is around the mirror and the top edge of the drivers door. See the images. Heater stopped working about 60 miles into the trip home from picking it up. I haven't looked to see what the issue is. Hopefully simple, but I don't know.I removed the speakers as they were very poorly installed (wood screws!?) and were kenwood speakers with JBL covers. Nasty. The light for the fan controls does not come on. The light for the gear map (on the shift lever base) only comes on when you push the piece forward. The cover needs replaced anyway as it is not in very nice shape. The drivers door is a bit hard to open from the inside. Fine from the outside. The lever needs an adjustment of some sort. I haven't taken the panel off to see how it is setup. So here is the good. The car runs well. I drove it back 250 miles continuous and it ran fine. The gas pedal was sticky during the trip, but I fixed it and now it is smooth. It starts easy. The idle is a little rough, but is probably easy to fix with a little carb tuning. Has the Weber Redline carb kit. Interior is in nice condition besides the carpets. All the seats, dash, etc... are very nice though. I removed the defective alarm kit the PO had installed. It was a nasty install so be glad it is gone. Includes the original wheels. Windows have newer seals. Alternator was rebuilt in June of 2011. That is basically everything I know about the car. As I said, I've only owned it for a few days so I don't have an in depth knowledge of it. Feel free to ask questions and I will answer them as best I can. You can also send any offers along. I would be interested in trading this for something else as well. I'd prefer a Jeep Cherokee Classic or similar, but will consider any offer. On Feb-07-12 at 14:53:17 PST, seller added the following information: Please note that this car was originally chamonix (white) and was repainted at some point to the current blue color. Also I noticed that the positive lug on the battery cable is in poor condition. I can't say for sure what has happened, but it looks like it broke and someone JB Welded it together rather than replacing. Scary stuff as I suspect that will leave you stranded at some point if it breaks again and the juice stops flowing! So that needs fixed right away - but is luckily quite easy. If you'd like to retract your bid in light of this new info you can do it pretty easily in your "my ebay" dashboard. On Feb-08-12 at 14:13:52 PST, seller added the following information: Okay, some progress. The new hazard light switch came in today and I installed it. Now the turn indicators all work correctly as do the hazard lights and the light on the hazard button itself. The only thing I've noted on the turn indicator system that isn't correct is when you turn the right hand blinkers on - the "B" on the dash lights up correctly once and the rest of the time it is on it only slightly lights up when the turn indicator is on. When you use the left hand turn indicator or the hazard lights the "B" on the dash lights up correctly every time. So now all the electrical is working besides the horn, odometer and the light inside the fan control switch. Tomorrow I'll make a video of the car running so you can see/hear it to get a better idea of the condition, etc... for those of you who can't come see it in person. I also noted two other issues. The drivers side door doesn't lock in the open position. Generally when you open a car door about half way the door clicks and it locks open so it doesn't shut on you while you are getting in and out. This door doesn't do that. It just swings freely. The passenger side does work correctly. The radio is not securely fastened in the dash. When I replaced the hazard switch I noticed that the plastic piece that holds the radio in the console has 4 broken tabs (out of 4 - so not good). These tabs hold the radio to the sides of the center console. It appears the radio is only being held in place by being tightly sandwiched between the two sides and having a piece of cardboard holding up the back side. So the good news is the fix is easy - a new plastic mounting plate. On Feb-10-12 at 15:08:34 PST, seller added the following information: Finally got a second to make a video of the car running, etc... Will be uploaded and a link posted here this evening. Two more things to note. The right front indicator running light is not on. Probably a burnt out bulb. The turn indicator does work though - just the dim running light doesn't. This is shown in the video. Also one of the two lights that light up the license plate is not working. Probably a burnt out bulb on that one too, but I haven't been able to check yet. This is also shown in the video. On Feb-10-12 at 16:53:41 PST, seller added the following information: You'll have to excuse the in focus/out of focus... shot it on a camera with manual focus and low light. I couldn't tell what was in and out of focus! Most is okay though. Also excuse my sniffling. It was 30 degrees out and starting to snow a bit... cold! Here is the link: http://youtu.be/Q4P8Eq2qZTE
