Vehicle Detail

1987 Toyota 4Runner / Hilux Surf Turbo Diesel. There are very few of these in the country. Everything is factory Toyota, and a clean example of a vehicle offered almost everywhere else in the world, but rare & highly sought after in North America. The vehicle was always kept in good condition and a clean non-wrecked California body. The title is clean, 100% legally registered as a diesel. So this now subjects it to smog emissions. (Some states are exempt from smog tests. It is exempt in California.) Registered miles do not reflect actual miles of this truck, which now is more like an almost brand new vehicle. This truck kicks ass, and id rather not sell. But sometimes you need to grow up and buy a house. So I'm passing it on down the line. Hours of research were put into this vehicle to make everything as correct as possible so everything is a true 4Runner diesel as offered by Toyota. The engine is the 2LTE with A343 automatic transmission, a great transmission for the engine, with 200,000 kilometers (124,000 miles)--minimal for a Toyota diesel. Complete drive train (engine, transmission, front & rear 4.88 differentials) and front wiring harness & instrument cluster (in kilometers) are from a very clean, low miles 1992 4Runner (Hilux Surf), the same class of engine offered in '87 as well, so still authentic to the year, but in much newer condition. It runs & shifts beautifully. In addition, most if not all moving parts on the body were replaced. The push button auto-locking 4x4 works perfectly, and the rear differential gears are brand new. In fact, most everything on this truck is brand new. New timing belt, tensioners, and water pump, engine mounts, temperature gauge, air filter, axle bearings, newer control arms/ball joints. All fluids & gaskets replaced, new oil filter. New fuel filter. New pressure cap. Two good batteries, one of which is brand new. New rear main seal, no leaks whatsoever. New Goodyear Wrangler tires. New 2.5" exhaust & muffler. Interior, including the carpet, is completely brand new with various trim replaced with parts from a clean low miles (~50k) 4Runner. The seats, door panels & rear headliner are new genuine Toyota SR5 material from '87. Usually these old 4runners are rotted and musty. Everyone comments that it smells brand new & just off the dealer lot. The heater blows hot, A/C could use a recharge, and many components there are brand new as well. New tint, stereo/speakers (4 inch kickers in the front, 6x9 Alpines in the back), Amp and sub pictured are not included, however i will leave the truck wired for your amp and box. 2-stage paint in original Toyota color, and '87 decals. Altimeter cluster lights up, works perfectly, and reads out surprisingly accurate elevation. Basically the vehicle is reconditioned from the ground up, and is a blast to drive in any condition, whether commuting, off-roading, camping, or hauling, and turns heads. You will get endless double takes in this truck. It sounds great, and looks great. You just cant find these in this kind of condition, with a turbo diesel no less. Some quirks:Cosmetically not much, it really is in awesome shape. Aside from a couple small scratches in the window tint (from my skis). All plastic pieces are in good shape.Rear window works, however not via the switch in the console. My mechanic rigged a temporary system behind the drivers seat. You connect two wires and the window goes down, reverse the wire and it goes up. He said a switch might be bad. Cheap fix, i just never got around to it. This truck will sometimes hard start, especially when it is very cold. Double glow and 2-3 cranks always gets her going. I think that a heated dipstick, electric fuel bowl assembly, or plug in block heater would be ideal for cold seasons. Truck would do great in the warmer climates. On the highway, it will drift right. The frame is straight, so i would imagine it is slightly out of alignment, again very simple, but it never bothered me. The engine is great to drive, and it is just as quick as the gas versions. It served as my daily driver for a short time. During that time, i drove it across the country, to Washington DC and back. Ran great. I have all reciepts for major and minor work done to the truck, as you can see in the pic. All done professionally. Between 12 and $13,000 invested. Major engine work was done by A&E in Los Angeles. Many other parts and service found and done at various Toyata dealerships in the LA area. It was leak down tested after all work was done, with no leaks found at all. Turbo seems to work great, winds up nicely. It is a pristine example of the engine. The mpg's are better than the 22-RE's. Some have been reporting as much as 30 mpg or more on the highway. And there's some fun things that can be done to increase to that, like an intercooler, manual hubs, slightly larger tires, and possibly changing to a manual transmission. But I've enjoyed it in it's factory condition. This is all I can think of right now, but feel free to ask. Thanks for looking, and good luck.$500 deposit via paypal due within 48 hrs. I want to clarify a few things, and add a few things i forgot. I would like to be as forthcoming about this truck as possible. I want to reiterate that the registered miles do not accurately reflect mileage of the truck. If you view the carfax, or vehicle history reports, they are based on the vin number. The vin number relates to the BODY of this truck, not the engine, transmission or drivetrain. Complete drive train (engine, transmission, front & rear 4.88 differentials) and front wiring harness & instrument cluster (in kilometers) are from a very clean, low miles 1992 4Runner (Hilux Surf). So, the dash reflects the mileage of the drivetrain, ie. the parts that matter. And, you should be able to see that the body is pretty clean from the pics. The hilux was not produced in or for the US, which is why everything reads out in kilometers. The major work was done on the truck by previous owner in late 2009 through 2010. Since that time, i have put roughly 14,000 miles on the truck. Work i have done to the truck includes but not limited to, regular oil changes, new fuel filter, new pressure cap, as well as various cosmetic upgrades, and new tires, i also replaced the spare with a good one. Tires have between 4 and 5,000 miles on them, and offer a surprisingly quiet ride for the aggressive tread pattern. Although, the truck itself is fairly loud. I do not drive it daily, but it did serve as a daily car for a short while. It currently is a third vehicle and i drive it rarely. Some folks have asked about the starting, most specifically starting in cold weather. Simply put, it will hard start. Sometimes it fires up on the first crank, sometimes it takes a double glow and 2 or three cranks. But, it always starts, and runs well. Im not a motorhead, nor a mechanic. I've had various suggestions regarding improving its starting from mechanics i know. But, because i dont drive it much, it hasnt been a priority of mine. I forgot to mention that i have the owners manual for the 1987 4runner. I also have the Max Ellery Auto repair manual (like a Chiltons manual) for Hilux/4runner 1979-1997 diesel engines. Also have a few extra new, oil and fuel filters that will convey with the sale. In addition, i have some extra modules, electonic bits and pieces that ive collected that will go with the truck. I also have various wiring diagrams to go with the truck. Truck is sold as is. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to contact me. If you want more pictures of a specific part of the truck, i would be happy to oblige. Message me with your personal email address, and i can send you whatever you would like to see. I can also be reached at 717-269-9338 if you'd rather speak over the phone. Please leave a message if i dont answer, as i might be at work. Best,PeteOn Jan-18-12 at 18:56:06 PST, seller added the following information: A few other items that people have asked about: Many people have asked if the truck has ever been overheated. I have never overheated the truck. I had one issue coming back to California while i was in the Rockies. I was between 9 and 11,000 feet of elevataion, when the temperature gauge started to quiver. I pulled the truck off at a rest stop immediately and noticed i had lost a lot of coolant via the overflow tube. It didnt overheat but i let it sit for a while and cool off and topped the radiator off with water and found the closest napa. We determined that the spring in my pressure cap was shot. It was a 16 lb cap. I brought it into the store, put it next to the first cap they pulled off the rack (14 lb) and found that the 14lb cap had significantly more pressure than the old 16lb cap. Not to mention, the seal on the old cap was dry rotted. I replaced the cap and didnt have that issue again. It looked to me like it was the original cap. I think the high elevation also had something to do with exposing the problem. The truck does readline at just under 5000 rpm's. Several folks have asked if ive ever run it over the readline with the turbo. A good question, as ive heard that over time that will wear on the engine. I can honestly say that i dont think ive gotten it over 4000 rpms. The way its geared it never gets that high, nor have i pushed the truck very hard. Im a little bit anal about how i drive it as i know its an old truck. Its never been abused, or pushed to hard. Some people have asked about the engine compression. The truth is i really dont know. Ive never gotten that in depth with the mechanics of the truck. My sense is that the engine life is good. Beyond your normal maintenance, and simple repairs, making sure fluids are good etc im not all that savvy On Jan-19-12 at 17:40:27 PST, seller added the following information: Some people asked about electronics and the alternator. Im wracking my brain, and aside from the switch for the window that i listed above, i cant think of any other problems. Ive never had to replace the alternator, and i dont have any documentation from the last owner showing an alternator relplacement. However, it takes a solid charge. The voltmeter tests out at 13.9 volts at the battery with the truck at idle.
