GM made hundreds of thousands of these cars during a production timeframe that spanned an entire decade; but because they were fast, cheap and affordable fun, F3s tended to get used up a lot quicker than other 80s metal. Fortunately, some people had the foresight to preserve a few awesome examples, and cars like this pristine 1989 IROC-Z convertible are seeing both bigger demand and increased pricing. With only 15,577 actual miles this rare ragtop is an all original stunner which mixes unbeatable open air fun with track-worthy Camaro performance. If you find yourself reflecting fondly upon the days when IROC Camaros ruled the streets; and now, much wiser, you're looking to get back into a super cool car that has true investment potential, this '89 Camaro is just the opportunity you've been waiting for. Looking spectacular in its original GM code 81 Bright Red paint, this smoking hot '89 IROC-Z carries a presence that is just as strong now as when the car rolled down GMs Van Nuys, California assembly line. According to a CarFax report, which is included with the sale, the cars bright red body has never been damaged in any way, and all its pristine paint appears to be 100% original. Naturally, factory panel alignment is good with acceptable gaps, and the cars overall finish displays little to no orange peel below a fantastic shine that pops even under the intense winter sunlight. It's pretty obvious that this Camaro was adored by a guy who was an expert at keeping cars at their peak, and it was clearly a cherished toy that has been carefully maintained in fantastic original condition. Unlike most 80s performance cars, Camaro stylists restrained themselves, even on the top-of-the-line IROC and the result is a timeless design which made such a lasting impact that its influences can still be seen in Chevrolets newest sports cars. There's no outrageous wing and no swoopy ground effects or side cladding; just clean, chiseled sheet metal with a classic shape that any car guy can recognize even if he's blindfolded. Up front, a showroom fresh plastic bumper props a clean F3 Camaro emblem between four clear headlights which are recessed into satin black buckets. Below those headlights, a rectangular grille centers bright fog lights between, clear parking lights which feature cool dynamic lenses. On top of the hood, aggressive black louvers flow toward tinted factory glass which props a black cloth top above pristine body-matched side spoilers. The profile of the car features a clean appearance which carries black flip up door handles, body-matched sport mirrors, arrow straight trim, and vibrant black and silver IROC-Z stripes, emblems and call outs which display no fading, chipping or peeling. Out back, a slick looking ducktail spoiler hangs above a blacked out rear valence, factory fresh tri-color tail lights and a clean rear bumper which is branded with a silver "IROC-Z" emblem. Powering this red hot Camaro is a familiar LO3 305 cubic inch V8 that both churns out enough horsepower and torque to keep this relatively lightweight pony car out in front of the pack, and enjoys a myriad of aftermarket options which create mind bending performance numbers. It's obvious that this engine bay has never seen snow or salt, and everything is as the factory assembled it right down to what appears to be original hoses, clamps and belts. All the plastic pieces, which are the components that usually age the fastest, are still bright white, and there's no corrosion on any of the cars fittings or seeping oil from any of its gaskets. And speaking of oil, maintenance receipts show that it has been changed regularly and the giant air filter up front has seen nothing dirtier than the haze on a warm summer day. Turn the key, and the familiar sound of a modern small block Chevrolet rumbles through the pipes as the engine utilizes its modern throttle body injection fuel system to fire up instantly. And, thanks to our fine detail crew here at RK Motors Charlotte, everything is clean and detailed and ready for the next show! The strongest transmission GM offered in the 1989 Camaro was the Turbo-Hydramatic 700R4 4-speed automatic found behind this cars small block V8. As clean as the cars pristine engine, it shifts smoothly, operates as new and has never been modified from its original state. Power flows from that stalwart automatic to a familiar GM 10 bolt rear end that's loaded with factory 2.73 cruising gears. While those gears might sound a little mild for a pony car, they work extremely well with the engines fat torque curve and allow a great combination of relaxed high-speed cruising and snappy stoplight acceleration. The chassis has been undercoated, probably when it was new, but based on the condition of the car, it was wholly unnecessary as these floors likely haven't seen a day of inclement weather throughout their entire life. All the factory bits and pieces are still in place, from the factory power steering to the factory equipped rear sway bar and I'll wager that even the front struts and tie rods are original to the car. Exhaust is handled by an OEM GM system which features a transversely mounted rear muffler with dual outlets; and braking is handled by factory power front discs and power rear drums. At the corners, original 16 inch machine finished alloys, which are some of the best looking wheels ever bolted to a Camaro, spin 245/50 Goodyear Eagle radials around silver "IROC-Z" branded center caps. Take a look inside this ragtop Camaro and you'll find a well-maintained gray interior that looks both clean and classy. Like the exterior and engine bay, everything is in excellent and 100% OEM condition and the gray power front and fixed rear bucket seats look good and feel great. At the center of the car, a pristine console carries switches for the power windows just behind the cars black automatic shifter. And in front of the driver, a super straight dash holds a mandatory "Z28 IROC-Z" emblem, a Delco AM/FM cassette player and crystal clear gauges behind a pristine three spoke factory steering wheel. At the bottom of the seats, original gray carpet looks surprisingly good considering the sunbaking that most convertibles endure; and at the sides of the seats, great looking door panels hold warp-free armrest below simple and functional door handles. Behind the cockpit, the cars black plastic convertible tonneau, which doesn't display any of the sun damage that's typical of well-traveled drop-tops, sits above a black carpeted trunk which is astonishingly roomy. Documentation included with this sale is the cars original owner's manual and warranty booklets, some key punch outs and a 2011 CarFax report. As you undoubtedly know, we have a real talent for finding clean, undamaged, stock muscle like this '89 IROC-Z. If you missed your chance to own one when they were new, or had one that you let get away, this car is a rare chance at redemption. Well-kept third generation Camaros are starting to enjoy some market movement and, while it won't make you rich overnight, this car has the potential to provide a nice return a few years down the road. And if you're the kind of person who enjoys driving his cars and reliving the past, this car will bring back some priceless memories!
