Only 3400 or so of these special cars were built during 1984 and 1985 model years. The unique features of the Model included the venerable 5.0L CFI V8 mated to an AOD transmission, Mustang GT suspension, 3.27 Trac-Loc rear end, special interior features including: power mirrors, power windows, adjustable lumbar supports, special lighting, console shifter, etc. Exterior features included blacked out trim, pinstriping, and special badging. This vehicle is a Fox Platform car, so many Fox specific performance upgrades/modifications can be made to this model as they may be made to Mustangs. This Model was brought to the market in the hope Ford would be able to better compete with some of the entry level euro sport sedans making their way to showrooms in the mid-80’s. The LTD LX was conceived some time after some Ford execs had paid a visit to Bob Bondurant’s School in Arizona, and they had operated some of the modified Mid-size LTD’s the Bondurant people had put into rotation as 4 door sedan training vehicles. Those cars were originally 4 cyl. or 6cyl. LTD’s with transplanted 5.0L engines and Manual transmissions. In 1986, the Ford Taurus came on the market, and replaced the LTD. The LTD was the last RWD mid-size sedan to be produced by Ford. -- - -- Primary Vehicle Data VIN: 1FABP39M7FG186511 Year:1985 Make:Ford Model: LTD Sub Model: LX Body Style: Sedan Number of Past Owners: 3 Owned How Long: 5 Location of automobile: Tempe, AZ Private Party Owned Engine Engine Type: V8 Displacement/ horsepower: 5.0L/165HP - Runs Fine Transmission Type: Automatic - Was rebuilt with shift kit. Evident in photos. *There seems to be some spots on the forward and top areas of the front fenders where someone previously got aggressive with a buffing machine. You have to be close to the car to see it(almost on top of it). *Fading color in the headlight buckets(again, I believe this is a fading of factory applied “black out” paint applied at the factory. Evident in photos. *Minor damaged front d/s headlight bucket. Evident in photos. Have replacement, but it’s from a regular mid-size LTD, so it will need to be painted before being installed. *On the roof, running parallel to the drip rail, p/s AND d/s, there is a series of minor “distortions” in the sheet metal. Not really dents. Hard to see unless you are right on top of them. They haven’t caused problems with the paint/finish. Honestly, seems like the entire roof is flimsy/thin/deflects easily—notice this every time I wash and wax the car. All the other sheet metal feels substantial. I think they might’ve been a little skimpy in resources in that area of the car during production. *Bumpers: shiny, but slightly “spotted” a bit. Have not attempted to polish them with anything other than Car wax. Bumperettes are abraded on the front on d/s. All strips and Bumperettes are in place and complete. *Plastic bump strip complete, and in good shape. *Weather stripping and seals all there and in great shape. *2 small dings in windshield—happened very early when I first got the car. They have not spread in any way from the original impact points. These might be epoxy resin fixable—have not looked into it, however. *Door dings here and there…nothing out of the ordinary for a car this old that hasn’t been restored. *I used Mother’s Powerball for Paint recently on the car, and was very impressed with how well the paint responded. Shined up REAL well for such an old finish(in my opinion). Interior Condition: *Headliner droops, or is separating from the backing. Has not gotten worse in years, but would still need to be replaced. *On the shifter surround: a previous owner dropped a dollop of some chemical which caused the appliqué to bubble up in one spot. see photo. *Seat upholstery piping is cracked in a couple spots on outer side of d/s seat. *Lumbar supports still pump up and hold air. *One of the center AC registers tilts VERY easily…just flops down. *Power mirrors work fine. *All interior lights work(map & dome light, interior console light, front & rear courtesy light, ashtray light, etc.) *Swapped original steering wheel for Mustang wheel of close to, if not the same year Mechanical Details: *3.27 Trac-Loc rear diff. *After market gauges(H2O Temp., Voltmeter, and Oil Press.) installed on D/S windshield pillar. *New 4 row radiator. *New SBF Edelbrock H2O pump. *New alternator. *AOD trans rebuilt with shift kit. Strong. *AC converted to R134. Cold. *5.0L CFI power plant. Runs smooth. Torque-y. *Same suspension as Mustang GT of the same year *New Muffler. *Probably will need tires. History of the car 1st owner had car around 17.5 years. Owner #1 put 11,517 miles on the car. Owner #2 put 7,734 miles on the car(total miles on the car when he sold to #3: 19,251 miles). Owner #3 put 1,853 miles on the car(total miles on the car when sold to 4th owner: 21,104 miles. He has put 34,729 miles on the car in the 5+ years he has owned it. It was a daily driver, driven very carefully/gingerly during ownership, and has been taken good care of. The LTD was the last RWD mid-size sedan to be produced by Ford. The car is a sub-60K mile car, that, if anything, would make a good daily driver Good profile. Imagine blacked out windows and some new chrome wheels. That would change the image of this sleeper! Dependable and adequate 5.0 Liter V-8 is fine as is or can be enhanced in performance without spending a great deal The A-pillar gauges add to the sporty look of the LTD Typical surface rust but no typical oil leaks ! This area can be repainted easily enough. It would probably look just as good with the shiny part exposed paint chip in hood - less than size of a dime Auto parts stores sell restore black matte paint in a rattle can that would help this area <>< -- ><> Questions?
