The minimalist shape of the Nova can be traced to its origins as an economy car, but when everything is done to show standards, it stands out as something special. The sheetmetal is so tight it appears stretched over the Nova’s chassis, and the single character line that stretches from nose to tail seems to visually make the car seem longer and lower than it really is. The paint is simply spectacular, with a miles-deep finish that only hours of tedious hand sanding can achieve. Good panel alignment also contributes to this car’s almost intangible good looks, along with a brilliant shine that’s a result of a good color sand and buff. All the original trim remains intact, but on a Nova there isn’t much, just nicely finished chrome bumpers front and rear, an SS grille up front, and proper ‘Super Sport’ emblems on the quarters. There just can’t be many Novas cleaner than this one. In some ways, the interior was restored to stock condition. There are new seat covers on the buckets, the carpets and door panels are new, and the center console has been refinished. Upgrades like the column-mounted tachomter, trick console gauge package, and the Hurst shifter for the Tremec 5-speed underneath give it a modern flair that’s the essence of the Pro-Touring movement. An SS steering wheel is the right choice in a vintage muscle car like this, and cleverly engineered A/C and stereo systems integrate neatly into the original dashboard without significant modifications. For better weight distribution and to free up some underhood space, the battery was relocated to the trunk, where it shares space with a full-sized spare with a surprising amount of room left over. Big power in a little package was the Nova SS calling card from day one, and with 400 cubic inches, this one carries some serious blasting powder under the hood. With an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, a Holley double pumper carburetor and a bunch of billet accessories, this isn’t just some lazy truck engine, but a quick-revving, high-winding street assassin that perfectly complements the Nova’s compact size and agile handling. The spotless chassis has been heavily massaged as well, including coil-over shocks, disc brakes, air shocks out back, and a rack-and-pinion steering system. A fresh dual exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers sounds absolutely amazing, both at idle and full song, terminating in subtle tips just behind the rear wheels. The suspension has been lowered, so it hunkers down just right over those beautiful polished 17-inch Torque Thrusts which wear staggered 235/45/17 front and 245/50/17 rear BFGoodrich T/A radials. Fully documented with receipts and manuals, early Novas don’t get much nicer than this.
