Vehicle Detail
Here is a one-owner 1977 280Z Datsun with manual transmission I recently acquired planning on doing enough work to put it in good running condition. The original owner unexpectedly passed away about four years ago and her husband placed the car in storage in a pole barn. The car was never driven in winters and was mostly a pleasure car for weekend driving and a few vacations, which is why it only has about 39,500 original miles on it. When the husband put it up for sale recently, he attached a battery to it and the engine fired up right away so we know the engine is in running condition. After sitting for four years, it is important to take a few steps before running an engine and these steps have not taken place yet. I had planned on replacing the muffler, checking the braking and cooling systems, replacing tubes and hoses as needed and then tending to body rust areas as time and interest permitted. I’m not a mechanic in particular, so I took the car to my local garage that I’ve used for years. The garage called me up and told me they would not work on the car because they felt there was too much rust underneath for it to be safe. I do not know how accurate this is. I do know that it looks pretty rusty underneath. Perhaps the unibody construction has too much rust to be safe as is, perhaps it needs reinforcement, perhaps it’s ok, but the garage does not want the potential legal liability in case something happened some time in the future. In any event, I am not going to try to persuade a garage to work on a car when they don’t want to. So, here is your chance to acquire a parts car with low miles on the engine and transmission, or possibly a project for restoration. I’d really like to see the car get back on the road, but I guess I’m not going to be the one to put it there. Winning bidder is responsible for all costs and efforts for prompt removal of the car.
