Vehicle Detail

Thanks for coming to check out this auction! Please view all 72 super sized photos in the web album and read the entire description before placing any bids. Thank you. This is a no-reserve auction! Shown here is a 1978 International Harvester Scout II 4-wheel-drive wagon/SUV complete with 304 cubic inchV8 engine, Super-Rugged 4-speed Borg Warner T-19 manual transmission with bulletproof 4x4 transfer-case, heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles, (convertible) removable top & doors, and more! It's pretty rare to see one of these in a manual transmission, and these models are much more sought after than the 3-speed automatics. The body is rusted out, particularly in the floorpan and rockers (see all the photos), but the fully-boxed frame is super solid. The previous owner got some aftermarket quarter panels, and amaturely attached them. Thankfully she just riveted them on, instead of welding them in place, because they're slightly crooked. One could drill out the rivets and re-attach them, and do it right, but if all you're after is a beater huntin' rig or something, maybe you don't even care about the aesthetics of it. It bugs me though. There are a few dents on the truck from years of use as you can see in the photos. The previous owner had it painted dark chocolate brown with pink wheels, and dual pink racing stripes running down the entire length of the vehicle, as well as pink flower door-panels!, so we absolutely HAD to do something about that. Now it's a much more aestheically pleasing color scheme in flat-tan. The glass is in good shape & not broken or cracked. The headlights don't turn on for some reason, and only the right turn-signal works. There is a new JVC detachable face radio/CD player which works... however the previous owner took the speakers with her before we bought the vehicle. The wipers, heater fan, speedometer and gauges, etc work. The engine runs well, and has true dual exhaust running all the way back with 2 mufflers, but has a slight exhaust leak up by the manifold, so it has sort of that farty sound... not super loud though, and it doesn't fume you out while driving down the road or anything... just something that should be mentioned. I think it probably just needs a $2 donut gasket where the manifold meets the rest of the pipe, but I didn't get around to doing anything with it, as it isn't too bad. The top does come off, and I’ve included a couple of other pictures in this listing of Scouts with their doors and roof removed. There’s about 30 bolts and screws which hold the top on, and it helps if you have a buddy to help you lift the top off once it’s unbolted (same with the doors, as they’re very heavy!). You can also get a pickup style "Terra" top (as I included a photo of as well), so you’ve got the versatility of 3 vehicles in 1…a 4x4 SUV, a Pickup, or a Convertible Roadster! There are Bikini tops, and custom quick-remove doors available for Scouts from a variety of sources on the aftermarket as well. Ours already has a factory roll-bar on it. The 4-speed transmission and transfer case are still in great shape, and work fine in all gears 2 & 4wd... the clutch doesn't exhibit any chatter or slippage whatsoever, and feels like it's got lots of life left in it. The truck has 102,570 miles on it and is drafty & noisy driving down bumpy roads (partly due to having no headliner to absorb rattles & road noise), but it fires right up, and drives out strong. It has a few creature comforts like power DISC brakes and pinky-easy to steer power-steering. The alignment is good, and the truck drives straight down the highway with no pull. This rig will go places a goat wouldn’t go! Scouts are just incredibly capable off road, and in the mud & snow. If you were to need anything for a Scout, there is an excellent source for parts and restoration right here in Iowa called The Scout Connection, and they’re located in Ft. Madison on the southern tip of Eastern Iowa. There are also a plethora of other IH Scout resources out there on the internet, so keeping this rig on the road for many years to come wouldn't be a problem. You don’t see these Scouts running around very often anymore, but this one is still in restorable shape despite it's rusty floor. They're made so well, with tough leaf spring suspension, solid front and rear axles. Posi rear end gears, lockouts in the front…unstoppable 4x4 performance! They’re built to tow, and you could hook up your boat, camper, ATV or snowmobile trailer, etc and go on some unforgettable adventures in this thing with the whole family (or yourself and 4 other buddies)! The truck has seating for 5 people plus some luggage space for your gear! I have listed everything I know about this cool old 4x4, but if you have any further questions, please feel free to e-mail us. If there are still questions unanswered in this description, you may call my partner and mechanic/bodyman, Jason at (641)512-5229 (afternoons and evenings). He can answer any further questions you may have about the vehicle. I've started out the bidding on this Scout auction at less than it’s worth with no reserve!, so be sure to get your bid in on it before it's gone. If you think you might not be around for the end of auction, or have unreliable internet service, etc, use a bid snipe service if you have to, but don’t miss out on this fun, classic SUV! Thank you for checking out this auction! If you have any trouble viewing the slideshow at the top of this page, please click on the thumbnail image below to view the web-album with 72 super-sized photos of this vehicle! IH Scout II If you plan to have this vehicle shipped with a car carrier, the auto transporters we have contact info for are as follows: Atlas Auto Shippers (888) 285-2706 There's also one called D.A.S. (Dependable Auto Shippers) with a shipping dock out of Altoona, IA about 2 hours from here. We've had excellent experience with Atlas, and not so excellent experience with DAS in the past sometimes, but it pays to shop around and get various quotes. ...and now for the fine print. This vehicle is being sold by myself: Jesse Wunderlich, 15791 Nettle Ave., Mason City, IA 50401. It is being sold As Is with No Warranty. A $250.00 security deposit is due within 5 days of auction's end via paypal or money order, and remainder of vehicle is to be paid for within 10 days of auction's end. The balance of the amount may be paid for in cash if picking it up in person, otherwise a cashier's check or money order acceptable if having the vehicle shipped. I have a good, clear Iowa title in my name for this vehicle with no leans against it, and can scan you a copy of the front and back of it prior to any money changing hands if you like. Title will be sent out upon the funds clearing my bank account (or handed to you in person if paying in cash upon arrival to pick up the truck). We're easy people to work with, and if you can't come get the truck right away, storage can be arranged for a reasonable amount of time until you can get here to pick the vehicle up (please ask before bidding if this is your intention). Also, deposits are considered non-refundable. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.
