This 1950 Willys wagon is a great example of the utility, style, and rugged character that they built for a market clamoring for new vehicles and fresh ideas. Remember that in 1950, many automakers were still building their wagon bodies from wood, so the sturdy Willys was a cutting-edge machine. The handsome, upright wagon body says Jeep as loudly as any modern CJ, and it’s instantly recognized the world over. Rumored to have been restored about 20 years ago, it remains in very nice condition, and it comes from a collection where it was obviously very well maintained. The finish has clearly aged over the years, and perhaps the hood and grille have been repainted, but somehow I like it even better because of it. It has a lovely patina that looks entirely appropriate on the mini SUV’s bodywork. The recessed panels on the bodywork don’t just simulate the conventional woody styling, they strengthen the bodywork, making this a sturdy little trucklet that can do a lot more than you’d guess at first glance. You’ll find that the interior is just as simple and straightforward as the body. Clearly still drawing from military basics, the interior is simple and handsome. The brown vinyl front seat is actually quite comfortable on its tubular steel frame, and the split back allows access to the back seat from either side. And by “back seat,” I mean it literally—there’s only one back there, the same kind of tubular frame and flat cushion as the front. However, the cargo floor is beautifully finished with wood strakes, and you’ll probably find a million and one uses for this versatile little machine. The dashboard is simple painted steel, but the ivory plastic steering wheel is in great condition, the gauges all work, and there’s a vintage AM radio in the dash that could probably be made to function without a lot of effort. Performance is modest, given the 134 cubic inch inline-four’s 72 horsepower, although the 3-speed manual with overdrive makes it plenty peppy around town and a decent highway cruiser at 60-65 MPH. Again derived from military specifications, the cast iron four cylinder has proven itself to be virtually indestructible, and after a rebuild during the restoration, it runs extremely well. With a giant oil bath air cleaner and a big oil filter, it was clearly built for severe service, and the big radiator keeps it ice cold under even desert conditions. Brakes and suspension were rebuilt at the same time, so it rides and stops as well as you could expect, and it sports a bright set of wide whites on the original steel wheels with Willys hubcaps. Back to basics was never as much fun as in this Willys wagon. You’ll appreciate its easy maintenance, utility, and especially the smile it brings to everyone’s face when they see it on the road.
