Vehicle Detail
1964 Chevrolet Malibu SS Exterior: Red Interior: White and red. The dash is red (metal), and the seats and door panels are white primarily with red in the center (see pictures below). There is a little black near the instruments. Motor: Not original. V8, 327, from a Corvette, rebuilt in 1995 (the original motor blew up, was irreparable). Transmission: 3-speed automatic. The original Power Glide is not present. Mileage: Though it is listed at "23692" miles (as required by eBay), neither the odometer nor speedometer have worked since I purchased the car in 1994. Ownership: I have owned this car for 17 years since 1994. I bought it from an owner in the Kansas City area. If I have read the General Motors tag correctly, the car seems to have been built in KC (listed as "64-5837 KC" on GM tag). History: After buying the car in 1994, I had it thoroughly reconditioned in 1995. New metal was installed in the floorboards, trunk, and in the quarter panels. The car was repainted as close to factory as possible (color listed as 975 on GM tag). The interior was customized, but following the original cut and thread patterns. New carpet was installed. All of the SS trim ("770" on GM tag, style as 64-5837) is intact on the car (sides and trunk). The grill is intact and in very good shape, although with one apparent animal damage ding (left front, from the prior owner). The previous owner installed rear air shocks, which still hold pressure. The SS wheel covers are present, intact, and in good condition. Because I intended to drive the car regularly, I installed seat belts (not factory, and the car is technically exempt from seat belt requirements). After reconditioning I drove the car continuously, as planned, for about a year and a half. In 1997, however, I moved to Chicago and put the car in storage. During the 1997- 2011 period, the car was driven only sporadically. Presently the 16-year old body reconditioning is showing some wear in "predictable Malibu spots" (corroborated through discussions with other Malibu owners). There are a few, small bubbles (approx. 3 square inches) in two parallel spots: (a) near the bottom, rear corners of the doors and (b) near both back windows (on the panel between the passenger windows and rear window). There are also chips in the paint at front of the hood (due to bugs from the useable period), and few small rubs and door dings from the sides (courtesy of parking lots). You notice these things from 10 feet, but not from 20 or the road. Summary: The car is not currently showroom quality, but is _much, much more_ than mere project or parts car. This car is ripe for a final restoration or show-level conditioning. I'm not expert on that kind of finishing, but a few body men tell me that a $5-6000 investment might make this a $20-25,000 car. Mechanically it is very sound. I just drove it for 2 plus hours a few days ago, and have been driving it bi-weekly this summer (2011).
