Vehicle Detail
It is with remorse that I am offering for sale my 1985 Ford Ranger 4X4 2.3 liter Mitsubishi Turbo Diesel 5 speed.. The truck is garage kept and has been in storage since 2006, as I live in Peru, and only use it about 3 times a year when in NY visiting family. I justified keeping the vehicle insured and registered all these years so that I wouldn't have to rent a car when in town, but the truth is I just didn't want to sell my baby. Plus, when I'm in town with my family, the truck stays in the garage, and we rent a car anyway. So, I have finally come to terms with the fact that what I'm doing just isn't practical, and the time has come to find a new home for my truck. As you can see from the pictures, the truck is in excellent condition, and all original, with all the original stickers and emblems still in place. She starts every time without effort in the coldest weather. The 4 wheel drive with manual locking hubs works fine. The doors, hood and tail gate all open and close perfectly, everything lines up, and as far as I can see, this truck has never been in an accident. For a Diesel, it has plenty of pep, and feels like there is a gasoline engine under the hood. It drives like a dream on the highway, and will do 75mph all day long with power to spare. It gets around 35mpg in mixed highway and town driving. I have a spare water pump, and a set of glow plugs, along with a complete shop manual, and the original owners manual. Please note that the pictures were taken over 2 years ago, the truck still looks exactly the same way, and the only difference is there are a few more miles on the ticker as compared to the odometer picture. Being out of the country as I write this, the 155,000 miles as listed is just an estimate. What is wrong with the truck? 1) It could use a set of tires.2) It drips oil when the engine is hot. It was never bad enough for me to do anything about it, other than placing a drip pan under the motor when parking for the night. Every so once in awhile, I'd have to add about a half quart, and since it holds 7, that really isn't much.3) The stick shift is somewhat worn and sloppy, and could use new bushings. This is not a hard or expensive fix, but once you drive the truck for a day, you get used to it just the way it is. 4) When the motor is warm and at normal operating temperature, the temperature gauge reads towards the upper end of the scale. The truck does not however run hot, I have used it in traffic in the hottest summer weather with no issues whatsoever. 5) The rear quarter panels around the wheel-wells have rust and have been repaired with bondo. Really not a lot there, and was done for cosmetic reasons only. 6) Being a Diesel, the truck is equipped with 2 batteries. One of them is bad, which is why you might notice one disconnected in the pictures. This happened last time I was home, and I didn't have time to replace it. Note the truck starts fine with just one battery. In closing, I will be in NY from 16 Aug. to 8 Sep. and would like to use the truck for one last time while I'm there. You are free to call and look at it at any time as of Tuesday the 16th, but will not be able to take possession until the end of my stay. Please send me any questions you might have, or you can call my cell 516 375 9316, and please remember this truck is over 25 years old.. Important update: The night before last Murphy's Law got the best of me, as I had a minor fender bender with the truck. A poorly lighted parking lot on a drizzly night without my glasses was the perfect recipe for the ensuing bad luck. On making a hard turn to the right, I clipped a light post with a concrete base on the trim at the bottom of the right quarter behind the door and in front of the wheel. The sheet metal is somewhat bowed in now, and the trim needs replacement. Please see the following recent pictures, https://picasaweb.google.com/albie.smith/1985FordRangerDiesel where the last two show the new damage. The damage is not significant, and completely fixable. This needless to say changes the dynamic, as I don't have time during my stay to get the vehicle fixed. I am therefore lowering my original buy it now price of $4500 by $1000 to $3500.
