The TF that followed offered slightly more streamlined looks in a bid to keep the cars competitive, but for many there’s just no substitute for the delicate fenders and free-standing headlights that the TD offers. This very handsomely restored and numbers-matching 1953 TD makes it easy to understand why so many people found these cars so appealing in the early days of sports cars, and even today it is a wonderful machine that is a pleasure to drive. Finished in black, this car presents as a fully sorted MG that’s ready to drive and enjoy immediately, and you can show it with pride at almost any venue. Restored MGs are typically even better than new, as five decades of knowledge can be applied, and this one fits together extremely well. Paint technology has come a long way, and even when they were new, there were no MGs this nice. The cut-down doors fit well, the sweeping fenders show few signs of road use, and there is absolutely no rust or rot anywhere on this car. It also offers bright, crisp chrome and matching tan windlace was used throughout the body to tie the whole car together. The tan leather interior was restored at the same time, and while the car is small, passenger space is impressive. This one uses a highly unusual bench seat type arrangement with separate seat cushions, which adds to the feeling of spaciousness. Fresh, fragrant leather, new carpets, and an array of beautifully restored Jaeger instruments duplicate the original driving experience. There’s also a matching tan canvas top with all-new hardware and sidecurtains, as well as a sporty tonneau cover that no MG should be without. Power comes from a sprightly 1250 cc inline-four that powered MGs for many years. It makes great torque and all the right sports car noises, winding through the gears with a mechanical precision that belies its original price. Fully rebuilt in 2002, it has been driven just 165 miles, enough to sort everything out but keep it perfectly preserved in a nearly-new state. Dressed in correct MG red paint, the engine uses a pair of SU carburetors to make the most of its abilities, and it pulls the roadster around with a gutsy engine note thanks to a fresh stainless steel exhaust system. The engine bay is nicely detailed with fabric-wrapped hoses, correct hose clamps, and period correct components throughout. Underneath, the chassis is rust-free and solid, and there are new floorboards along with a set of 165R15 radials on the original steel wheels. With little more than a professional-level detail, this car could easily be ready for show. For affordable summer fun, it’s awfully hard to beat a vintage MG. Highly documented and ready for years of happy motoring without any additional investment, this TD is as wonderful to drive as it is to look at.
