Vehicle Detail
1978 Chevy Monza Hatch Back I drive this car about two to four times a month, and it runs great. I am the second owner. The engine was rebuilt about 50K miles ago give or take. Many other parts were replaced by the original owner. That is why, at 240,000 miles this car still looks and runs as good as it does. Inline 151 CID Four Cylinder ('Iron Duke') Four Speed manual transmission. Everything else is manual also, no frills or gadgets. Here are the good points and the bad points: First the bad 1. The rear brakes are a bit touchy. I drive it this way, but let me emphasize that you might want to have the brakes adjusted or repaired. 2. The pins in the driver door are worn so the door is somewhat hard to shut. It dose shut fine with a good slam, and does not leak. 3. The speedometer quit a few weeks ago. Needs a cable. 4. The carpet is worn, especially at the diver's feet. 5. The paint is pretty good. On the diver door I have re-sprayed to fix a scratch and it looks a bit dull and has some orange peel. 6. Valve cover gasket has a very slight leak. 7. The radio does not work. Now for the good 1. Rebuilt Engine is in fine shape, does not burn oil, and is not gummed up. Chalk this up to regular oil changes. 2. Four brand new tires ($240) 3. New Alternator and Battery in past month ($100) 4. Drives straight, hands off, no pulling or wandering. I have run it at 70-75 mph on the interstate and it tracks nicely and smoothly. Drove it from Dallas to Oklahoma City awhile back, and it drove just fine. More recently I went to Abeliene TX and, again, it ran well on the freeway. 5. Good body panels – a life-long Texas car. 6. Has a recent Texas inspection that is good until May 2012. What you have here is a fairly well treated car that has seen many a mile but has not been abused. It was parked in a garage until I bought it a couple of years ago. It could be a daily driver or turned into a drag car (some of these came with V-8s). She ain’t perfect by any means, but she sure ain’t junk either. I think that the sensor is malfuntioning.
