1999 Porsche 996 Carerra Convertible 1999 Porsche 996 Carrera Convertible (911) - Valued at $28,000.00 ++ No Reserve - Starting bid - half price - only $14,000 (less than the value of the body alone). Here's a new YouTube video: OK, here's the deal. I purchased this car without checking with my wife. Not a good idea. I love it, it's beautiful, runs great, but must go. My four kids love the car, we enjoy it, drive it, play in it. It's the car they all want to take whenever we go out on a nice day. But my oldest turned 15 years old a few days ago and having a Carerra convertible in the garage is too much of a temptation, we need to sell the Porsche and get a car that he can start learning in. He needs a car that he can scratch, dent, and that won't cause our insurance to shoot through the roof. This car deserves to be driven. The paint is in pretty good shape but there are some scratches and chips as you'd expect from a 13 year old car with 140k miles on it. I've tried to get some photos of them. The previous owner used some touchup paint on some of the front bumper scratches but they probably need some buffing out to look better. Same on the the other scratches, most look like they could be buffed out. The car is beautiful but could definitely use a good detailing. I just don't have time. With that being said, the photos are NOT after a professional wax job like many other eBay listings. This is after a quick rinse to get the dust off the car. A good wax job will do wonders. Many early 996 cars and Boxters have had the engines rebuilt or replaced. Apparently there were some problems with the engines. To the best of my knowledge the engine in this car has NOT been rebuilt or replaced. It runs strong and is very powerful but at some point in the future (sooner or later) you will probably need to have the engine worked on. Any Porsche mechanic will tell you the same thing. Cost can range from buying an engine out of a wreck for a few thousand dollars and putting it in yourself to taking it to a Porsche dealer and pay more than the car's worth to put in a new engine. Again, the car is dong fine now but you just need to know what to expect down the road with ANY Porsche 996. This car is showing the early signs that they all show - there is a little oil showing up on the coolant cap when you take it off. Good news is that it's not too much and there doesn't seem to be any problems with the engine oil - no emulsion showing on the dip stick. A few months ago, the check engine light came on and I had the codes checked. It came back with a vacuuum leak / gas cap leak code. The gas cap was good but I discovered that the plastic tube that you fill the oil from was broken. I tried to tape it up with some electric tape but it still has the vacuum leak. See the photo where I point out the electric tape. The shop said the part was less than $50 but they'd have to pull the alternator off to replace it (a few hours of labor). I just decided to let the buyer decided to eitiher do it themselves or have their own shop do it. This vacuum leak seems to cause the car to idle slowly (though still very smooth and it doesn't stall or anything like that) when the car warms up fully. Bid accordingly. The Porsche dealer told me that the color combination is custom and very rare with the blue car and tan top. (I do not have the hard top.) Also the top has the glass rear window instead of the plastic one that scratches up. To me the horn sounds "anemic" like one of the two horns is either disconnected or not working. The turn signal switch does not go back to the "off" position when you make a turn. This is annoying since when you make a turn you will forget to turn it back and your blinker is still flashing till you notice. This same stalk (all one unit) is part of the wipers, etc. and is the likely culprit in another annoyance. If you don't run the car for a few weeks, the battery will drain down and will need to be charged up if you don't keep a trickle charger on it (cheap at the auto parts store). This was traced down to the wiper or A/C circuit which has a small current flowing even when the car is off. I never drive the car in the rain, so I just pulled the wiper fuse (keeping it handy in case). This is probably related to that same steering wheel switch (turn signals, wipers, etc). It's a commonly replaced item that many shade tree mechanics do on their own. (just haven't had time, again). The car has a spare tire, but I'd recommend patiently waiting for a new one to come up on eBay since the one in the car is in pretty bad shape (I wouldn't want to go more than a few miles on it). The tires on the car have decent tread but seem pretty old. Fine for weekend putting around, going with the kids to the pool, nice sunny day crusing (like I use it) but you might consider new tires at some point if you plan to do more agressive driving or want to start commuting to work, etc. Your call of course. All of the electronics seem to work from Radio, A/C, climate control, cruise, CD player, lights, seats, etc. The convertible top looks to be nearly brand new - the canvas still beads water when it gets splashed by the hose. The spoiler goes up and down with the manual button and I assume it also does at speed though I've never had anybody following me at 75mph to check. (I dont' think I've ever gone that fast anyway). I also have an extra brand new air filter for the car that I was going to put in. I took the old one out and it was in pretty good shape, so I kept the new one till it needed to be replaced. I also noticed two other small things when in the car today (7/20). The cigarette lighter is missing (the piece that you plug in and gets red hot to light your cigarette). Also the little spring loaded door for the ashtray will not stay closed - you push it down and it seems like it should click somehow but just slowly swings back up. I never noticed it because I always have my cell phone charger plugged in. The Tiptronic works (and is pretty cool!) with the shifter stalk and the steering wheel mounted buttons. I LOVE this feature. It holds the gear you select and lets you shift like a manual without a clutch. Way cool. Going back in the Autocheck (like Carfax) records before I bought it, the car came from Texas originally and seems to have been repossessed by the bank. I guess somebody didn't pay the loan. It then ended up with a guy in Indiana who I bought it from. This guy was a good Christiain who was very up front about the car with me (just as I am with you!). What goes around comes around. Remember the golden rule! I'm guessing that this repo is why the car didn't have any records or the owner's manual. But, you probably can get the service records directly from Porsche if you want to and provide them proof of ownership. To summarize, I recommend you drive this car, enjoy it, love it, don't stress about keeping it perfect. You will be able to purchase it for less than a Hyundai and drive a much cooler car. I was almost embarassed to drive it sometimes because so many people would come up to me and say "nice car" or do a thumbs up when they saw me driving. People for some reason think you're rich driving it even though it probably cost less than their Honda Civic. That's the truly neat part of driving a classic car like this. Awesome. Finally, make sure you bid understanding that eventually EVERY early 996 or Boxter eventually needs some engine work - sooner or later. This car could run great for 5 more years poop out tomorrow. There's no way to know for sure. Good news is that this car could be sold for parts for probably more than $40,000 if somebody wanted to be patient and part the car out on eBay or Craigslist. You get a nice, running, clean, straight car with working convertible, nice interior, working electronics, transmission, etc. The car has literally HUNDREDS of parts, below is just a small sampling of used part prices I found. Parting it out would be a pain in the butt but lots of folks make money doing this. The nice thing about this car is that it drives great, could give you years of fun and the parts themselves give you the comfort that you won't lose money either way. They're not making any more of these cars, the convertibles will always be classics and the parts will probably go up in value every year. Check out one of the Porsche dismantlers like http://dcauto.gotdns.com/?p=2 or http://www.stutgartclassicpart.com to check prices of used parts. The prices below came directly from DC Automotive, one of the largest Porsche dismantlers. Used Body (Clean/Stripped) : $15,000.00 Wheels (4) : $299 each, $1196.00 total Dashboard Trim Leather: $750.00 Exhaust Manifold : $188.00 each, $376.00 XNU Moulding passenger's side savanna /LL/R : $395.64 XV1Defroster trim leather savanna / : $452.72 Used Tiptronics Transmission : $2602.59 Rear Bumper Cover : $475.00 Windshield : $450.00 Lining luggage compartment grey /H : $181. 95 Rear Bumper Reinforcement Bar : 280.00 Running, used engine : around $3000.00 Wheel Carrier (swingarm) : $500 each, $1000.00 Fuel Tank: $913.69 Fuel Pump: $400.00 Tank Guage: $205.97 Filler Neck: $292.14 Steering Rack: $450.00 Front Crossmember : $250.00 Throttle Body : $400.00 Water Pump (New) : $242.26 (the one on the car has about 1000 miles on it) Side Radiators : $200.00 each, $400.00 Instrument Cluster : $500.00 Headlight amber turn : $300 each, $600.00 Carrera rear light housing : $125 each, $250.00 Hood : $300.00 Convertible top covering without rear window : $2247.71 Convertible top roof lining : $681.93 Rear window, gasket, frame : $672.13 + $562.37 + $101.28 = $1335.78 The list above is just a SMALL sampling of the hundreds of parts (probably thousands?) on the car that could be sold online using eBay or Craigslist. If you add the seats, carpet set and much of the rest of the interior, the value of parts alone skyrockets! I'm NOT suggesting that you buy this car for parts, it is a CLEAN title car that is running fine. It is NOT a salvage title car and there is no lien on it. You should just detail it, get in and drive. Be sure to perform routine maintenance as needed and to get more life out of it, flush the radiator often and you may want to change the oil more often than recommended. I'll need a $500 deposit within 48 hours of purchasing to hold the car. Bid with confidence - if you purchase the car and don't think I've described it properly, I'll let you out of the auction minus the cost of the listing and half of your deposit. I have to go through the cost and hassle of relisting it and dealing with another buyer. Once you have taken the car it's yours - you may NOT get your money back after the car has left my driveway. I will need cash or a local bank cashier's check. No scammers, no money orders, no "cash back". *** Important - my feedback is 100% positive, the only negative comment was a mistake, read the person's comment, they loved me but clicked on the wrong button in eBay "very helpful and great to deal with". *** Here are a few photos:
