Add some sweat equity to an already solid, presentable package, and you have a car that offers a tremendous amount of upside and can still be driven and enjoyed while you work. Refinished 15-20 years ago, the car still looks good going down the road, but some TLC would definitely take it to the next level. The paint was well done at the time, but would benefit from a proper cut and buff to bring out the shine. The flashy two-tone Colonial White/Torch Red combination looks period-perfect on the big Galaxie, accenting its length and modest tailfins. Chrome and stainless, always the most expensive part of any restoration, remain in good condition and would probably deliver a brilliant shine with little more than an afternoon spent buffing and polishing. The interior may be original, or at least old enough that the line has become blurry. There are no major issues, with the only notable flaw being some tearing at the base of the driver’s seat. Otherwise, the front and rear benches are comfortable and dressed in matching red and white vinyl, the door panels offer slick ‘50s armrests, and the original gauge cluster is surprisingly clear. The carpets are undamaged, although it’s obvious that this car has spent a lot of time in the sun with the top down, but isn’t that what ragtops are all about? And speaking of tops, the power convertible top remains functional and is hidden by a matching white vinyl boot when stowed. Tilt the hood forward, and you’ll find a smooth-running 332 cubic inch V8 that makes a very respectable 225 horsepower thanks to a 4-barrel carburetor. Someone has invested some time in the engine bay, with Ford Blue paint on the block and that massive air cleaner, as well as tidy accessories and wiring. Manual steering and 4-wheel drum brakes were par for the course in 1959, but the car is easy to drive and runs down the road with a smoothness you just won’t find in modern iron. A 3-speed automatic transmission drives the original rear end, and the chassis is probably 100% original save for maintenance items. The dual exhaust system has been replaced in the distant past, but remains leak-free and gives the V8 a nice rumble that isn’t out of character. Relatively recent 215/75/14 whitewall radials protect the original steel wheels with stylish wire hubcaps. Someone has already invested a good amount of time and effort in this Galaxie, and as I said, it’s presentable and usable as-is. But for the beginning hobbyist, it’s an excellent candidate for summertime fun, both in and out of the garage. Reliable, comfortable, and spacious, this Galaxie is a great way enjoy top-down motoring without a massive up-front investment. With a little hard work and elbow grease, it will be easy to upgrade its appearance along the way.
