Vehicle Detail
1951 Mercury Deluxe Lead Sled Estate Sale Offered here is one of nine cars from the estate of a local collector. This particular car was one of his favorite ones to drive and he was seen cruising all around the area. Chopped, channeled, frenched, shaved and decked are a few words to describe this Mercury Lead Sled. This car started out life as a 1951 Mercury Deluxe 6 passenger Coupe and it since has undergone quite the transformation. The entire body was channeled over a 1970’s era Oldsmobile chassis. In addition to using the Oldsmobile frame the builder also used an Olds 455 engine, Turbo Hydromantic transmission and four link style rear end assembly. The car now has power steering and power disc brakes. By using this more modern chassis the car really benefits from the much-improved handling and driving characteristics. The roof was chopped and other custom metal work completed to give it this iconic look. A Cadillac interior was fitted into the cabin and features full power seats along with power windows as well as a Tilt column and an AM/FM CD Player. This car is from an estate and the car has been sitting for approximately two years. As a result it is being sold AS-IS, so please be aware that it will need some service work and safety inspection prior to operating it on the public roadway. The car does start up and the engine runs very good. You can put it into gear and move it around however there is a significant transmission leak as well as a slight hesitation when switching into gear. The brakes feel good however again this area would need to be inspected, safety checked and tested to ensure it is operating properly. The wide whitewall radial tires were just installed prior to the previous owner’s passing and the rubber tips are still on the treads. The chop and metal work looks pretty good, the back window is laid down nicely and the car has great lines from all angles. The final bodywork and paint job is extremely poor. It looks nice from a distance and is completely functional however upon closer inspection you can see evidence of body filler, scratches, chips and heavy orange peel in the paint and unevenness in the overall finish. The interior is dated and again is usable however the headliner should be replaced as well as the carpet. Overall this car has great bones and a lot of hard work has already been completed. It is a car that with a minimal investment in service and repairs work can be quickly on the road and being enjoyed. Another option would be to take it to the next level and build your show car. In either case all of the service items like, brakes, suspension, driveline, etc. can be easily obtained from your local parts store. This is an excellent opportunity to get a really good deal, as the estate wants this car sold. There are only two other cars left from the entire collection and there have been some really good buys! Own this custom Mercury Lead Sled and watch how many heads you turn. In the event that this car does not meet the reserve the final bidder ONLY will have his offer presented to the estate for consideration. So make sure to bid if you really want this car. So far a couple of the other deals fell well short of the estates expectations and we presented the final offer and it was accepted. Good luck with the auction and remember this is your chance to legally bid early and often!
