Vehicle Detail

Car for sale is my brother's 1977 MGB that he has owned for the last 4 years that has 108,400 original miles on it. The car was professionally painted the current black prior to him owning it, and over the years he's has purchased a lot of new parts in his endeavor to move the car the closest to new as he can make it. I have done a lot of the repairs over the years as I was a Certified mechanic in a MGB / Triumph dealership back in the day. The entire time my brother has owned the car, it has never been left out in the weather, and other than a few short rides around his home and one classic car cruise, it has stayed stored in his garage. The top was replaced new two years ago, and a completely rebuilt cylinder head was also purchased as an assembled unit. For those of you who would have interest, I recently took compression readings and those results are; #1 cyl. - 147 psi, #2 cyl. - 155 psi, #3 cyl. - 154 psi, and #4 cyl. - 148 psi. Also in the list of new parts installed within the last two years are a new radiator and antifreeze, all new coolant hoses, thermostat, water pump, alternator belt, both motor mounts, distributor cap, rotor, points, condenser, plugs, plug wires, all upper engine gaskets, negative battery cable, heater control, both rear wheel cylinders, all 3 wiper blades, left outside mirror, battery, chrome lug nuts, and of course fresh oil and oil filter. I'm sure there are other misc items installed that I missed in the above list as my brother was very particular to detail out the car, as far more time was spent buying and installing parts than actually driving the car. The car has a number of nice features like the rear luggage rack, front disc brakes, 5 matching mag wheels, original side lift jack, an AM/FM cassette radio with two 200 watt 6 x 9 inch speakers in the back, Audiovox Silver Series speakers in the doors, and a car cover as shown in the last picture. The bottom of the doors are super solid with no rust, as is the trunk floor, and also the rocker panels as shown in the picture. Both drivers and passengers side floors have been repaired in a professional manner, and the only things that I am aware of to fault the car is the dash cover is cracked as shown in the pictures, and the carpet needs to be replaced to look really sharp. Those two items were on his list to replace, but he has come to the conclusion that at this point it best to recoup some of the money he has spent on a car that basically just takes up space in his garage. The drivers seat also has some holes as I also have shown in the picture. So I won't say the car is perfect, but for a classic car 34 years old it is a very sharp looking car that starts and runs great, drives down the road nice, and shifts smooth. Since I am selling the car for him through my ebay account, the car is currently with me as I live 120 miles from my brother, and I just put the clear Michigan title in my name for insurance purposes. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me, Dave at (901) 389-8861. Please note that I am asking for a $250 Paypal deposit within 24 hours of auctions end to lock in this transaction, and the remaining balance is to be paid in cash at the time of pickup. On Jul-14-11 at 12:50:14 PDT, seller added the following information: As I stated in the ad the carpet could use replacing, so I would be willing to install for free labor new carpet if the winning bidder were to pay the additional amount that the carpet cost. I checked today with Victoria British Ltd., and the Standard carpet kit retails for $228 shipped to my address, or the Deluxe kit is available for about $100 more.On Jul-16-11 at 22:31:28 PDT, seller added the following information: I want to make mention of a few things worth noting as I've been able to look over the car this week. First I want to note that my schedule has changed, and I will not be available for pickup on the car until Thursday 7-21-11 at the soonest, as I will be gone out of town Monday through Wednesday this next week. Concerning the car, I know it is difficult at best to buy a vehicle sight unseen, so I am attempting to give enough detailed information so the buyer will not find any surprises. I mentioned in the ad that the floors had been repaired. So more detail on that is that only part of the front areas of the floors were rusted, so those areas were neatly cut out to surrounding support members, and then custom fit full length floor replacement panels that went all the way from the firewall to behind the seats were welded in and then sealed all the way around inside the car and also underneath the car. Then the entire interior was brush painted semi-gloss black, and the undersides of the new floors were undercoated to match the rest of the underside of the car. So all that process gave the interior very solid new floors and also a factory new look (you don't see it with the carpet in, but it looks great). Concerning the brakes, as I mentioned the rear wheel cylinders were replaced new. Well, I pulled the wheels to inspect all the brakes, and the rear shoes are all brand new as are all the springs and hold-down hardware, and the drums also look new, as they show no gouging and no lip at the edge. My brother or I didn't remember that we did those repairs when the rear wheel cylinders were replaced. The front rotors are in great condition with no gouging or any sign of being cut in to. The front pads look to have about 1/2 or better life yet, and the brake lines under the car appear to be in solid condition. The tires look to all have about 1/2 life yet, and I've added a picture to help show that. The clutch gives no indication of slipping, and the hydraulic system of the clutch is working as it should. I've removed all the carpet and cleaned it, but I don't want to reinstall it until I get the word from the buyer whether he/she wants new carpet or the old put back in. I'll gladly install either, but either option will need a couple of days for the glued areas to dry. As the top is new, the plastic windows on the top are really nice and clear, but there is some kind of rub spot in the drivers window that was there prior to my brother owning the car. I will add a picture to shown what I am taking about. The rest of the glass on the car looks great with no other flaws that I can find. I noticed that there are no sun visors, so I asked my brother about that, and he said they were not on the car when he purchased it. I will be checking the fluid levels in the differential and transmission, and I've rechecked the valve lash just as a precaution. The air filter looks to be new, but I discovered one of the three air cleaner housing attaching bolts broken, that I may or may not have time to repair. I don't believe that bolt to be critical, as the air cleaner is totally secure with the two bolts that are currently holding it on. The paint work on the car is really nice, so I believe it was probably done by a upper class body shop. I did find one small paint chip at the top of the passenger door right under the window seal that I will try to touch-up and make it look as unnoticable as I can. I do find some oil residue on the oil pan and bottom of the transmission, but that may be oil that leaked and blew back prior to all the new engine gaskets that my brother and I put on. The other likely options are a front crankshaft seal or the oil pan gasket which neither one is very difficult as one of the beauties of this car is that you can get to everything on the engine very easily. The exhaust system appears solid, and the front pipe is new. I have tried to inform readers of everything that I know about the car, and I'm sure prior MGB owners can appreciate all this detail. But I would like to make a comment to those of you who have never owned a MGB. Every part you will ever need for this or any other MGB is readily available from places like Victoria British LTD. in Kansas, and even a lot of the mechanical parts you can get from places like Autozone, Advance and other chain stores. The prices are also very reasonable considering the age of these sports cars, but the main thing you need to keep in mind is that it is unlikely that stores stock the parts on their shelf. Probably everything will have to be ordered, so there will always be some kind of wait time involved when you need to buy something for your MGB. So I want to caution any buyer that wants to fly here and then drive the car home. Even though I feel the car would be totally fine to drive anywhere you want to, I also know that even near new cars can and do break down on the road. So if that should happen to you with this car or a different MGB, then you probably will have some kind of wait time if parts have to be ordered. Please don't take that last sentence as my disclaimer that I think you will break down. On the contrary, this is a really nice daily driver car, and I very much believe that this car will continue to perform excellent with regular maintenance based on the history my brother and I have had with the car. So I say all this for those of you who want to drive a fun cool looking sports car, but have never owned a MGB, Triumph, or other makes of vintage forgein cars. The parts are available, but they will probably need to be ordered, so plan ahead.
