PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU BID. 1928 FORD MODEL A (AR) TUDOR Briggs Body Type: 55A – VIN# RF8660 – Body# SFA2145 PARTICULARS ABOUT THIS FORD MODEL A (AR) Authors and historians often referred to early production Ford Model As as the “AR”. Compared to later Model As, relative few ARs remain in existence today. They are distinguished by the left-hand parking brake lever -- which actuated the brakes on all four wheels; a multi-disk clutch; and rear brake drums without separate parking brake shoes. Later in 1928, Ford replaced the multi-disk clutch with a more economical and less troublesome single disk, moved the parking brake near the transmission shift lever, and added a separate parking brake system to the rear drums. According to its body number (SFA2145), this Ford Model A (AR) was built around February of 1928 (the second month of full production), and is one of 15,132 vehicles produced by Ford’s San Francisco Assembly Plant during that model year. Painted Dawn Gray/Gunmetal Blue with Straw stripe, this Ford Model A (AR) is in rock-solid condition, without any debilitating rust problems in its chassis or bodywork aside surface specks. The body is all original steel. In addition, this is a road-worthy Ford Model A (AR). The carburetor, battery, generator, wiring harness and radiator were recently replaced, and the car has been driven on a monthly basis since its powertrain was rebuilt with the less-troublesome single-disc clutch. It is clean, completely lubricated, has a fresh crankcase of oil and radiator coolant. The horn, lights, brakes, clutch and transmission all work as they should, as does the windows and instruments. It has a clean California title and the registration is valid for the next 10 months. Don’t miss the opportunity to own a rare, early-production 1928 Ford Model A (AR) Tudor. PARTICULARS ABOUT FORD’s MODEL A Henry Ford introduced the Model A nearly 18 years after he made the first Model T. While Ford felt that the Model T was everything that the American public needed at the time, the marketplace didn't agree -- in the low-priced car market, Chevrolet was closing in on Ford's sales leadership and Chrysler was ready to spring into the fray with its entry-level 1928 Plymouth. Changes were needed at Ford, and when those changes came in the form of the Model A, they were extensive. The changeover from the Model T to the Model A was almost as radical as today’s changeover from gasoline-powered cars to hybrid-electric and hydrogen. Where the Model T transmission was a two-speed, pedal- operated planetary system, the Model A utilized a three-speed, lever-operated sliding gear with a clutch and reverse. The ignition on the Model T used a magneto operating off the flywheel, while the Model A used a Kettering-type battery-and-coil system. Four wheel brakes were also featured on the new car, as was a water pump to circulate coolant through the engine -- previous Ford engines depended on the thermo syphon to circulate their coolant. The Engine was an L-head 4-cylinder, 'cast en bloc' type. It had a 3-7/8" x 4-1/4" bore and stroke, and a displacement of 201 cubic inches (3.3 liters). It produced 40 HP at 2200 rpm, and the typical gas mileage was between 20 and 30 mpg using a Zenith one barrel carburetor. The wheelbase was 103.5" and early Model As rode on 4.50 x 21" tires with a final gear ratio of 3.77:1. The Model A had 4-wheel mechanical brakes and Houdaille, double action hydraulic shock absorbers with semi-elliptic front and rear transverse springs. Top Speed was near 65 mph. The Model A came in a wide variety of styles: Coupe (Standard and Deluxe), Business Coupe, Sport Coupe, Roadster Coupe (Standard and Deluxe), Convertible Cabriolet, Convertible Sedan, Phaeton (Standard and Deluxe), Tudor (Standard and Deluxe), Town Car, Fordor (2-window) (Standard and Deluxe), Fordor (3-window) (Standard and Deluxe), Victoria, Station Wagon, Taxicab, Truck, and Commercial. Standard equipment on all Models included a Starter, Five Steel Spoke Wheels, Dashlight, Mirror, Windshield Wiper, Oil Gauge, Gasoline Gauge, Rear and Stop Light, Speedometer, Tools and Pressure Grease Gun Lubrication. The "Model A" Tool kit included with each car had the following items: Adjustable wrench, 2 open-end wrenches, 2 tire irons, jack, pliers, screwdriver, tire pump, grease gun, combination spark plug wrench and head bolt wrench and Instruction Book which all fit into Snap Pouch. As for price, the new Model A Tudor Sedan (the official Ford name for the two-door sedan) sold for $495.00 with the Fordor bringing $570.00 F.O.B. Detroit. For $485.00 you could get a Roadster and $595.00 would get you a beautiful Phaeton. At $495.00, the new Ford Coupe was nice but for $550.00 the Sport Coupe with a standard Rumble Seat was a popular seller. During its life span of three years (1928-1931), Ford produced nearly 5 million Model As worldwide, and thousands of them survive today.
