Vehicle Detail

I am regretfully listing our faithful Ponton, 1958 Mercedes 220S for sale. It has been our reliable companion for 16 years and has generated many fond memories but now it's time to let another owner enjoy it. I bought her from the original owner's family in Hollywood, CA and it was a California car until we moved to Oregon in 2008. It was originally black, repainted many years ago in the present cream color. Not the best paint job, but it still looks presentable. The body is above average but not a show car, shows some "Bondo" spots and minor rust in a couple of places. Trunk lid does not lock. As the photos show, the interior is very good for its age: dash is still nice and the only wood that could stand replacing is the driver's door window sill. The seats are very nice, like sitting in your favorite easy chair. The original upholstery was leather but was replaced with a high grade of vinyl by previous owner. I had the door panels redone to match the seats. The headliner appears to be original and is still in great shape. The ivory-colored steering wheel - as used on the high-end coupes and cabriolets - replaced the original black one and it looks almost new. The experience of driving this fine quality car is a real treat. Once you have mastered the four-speed column shift pattern it shifts easily, steering is light compared to domestic cars of the same era, and the ride and handling with the Bilstein shocks is still superior to any other vintage car I've owned. The power-assisted brakes are very effective. Looking out the windshield at the rounded hood and the upright three-pointed star makes you feel like somebody special! I have all service records since 1995. The tires are in great shape. The lights, horn, wipers, all work. The radio is a period AM/FM Motorola. Thre FM quit working but you can get a few AM stations. The heaters have been disconnected (don't know why) by previous owner. They would need repair and so would the heat/vent controls on the dash. There is a hum in the rear end on accelleration. It was present when I bought the car and hasn't gotten any worse since. Probably due to wear in the differential. The engine has run like a Swiss (or German) watch until recently when I had the stock fuel pump replaced with an electric one. Since then there have been instances of rough running and plug fouling. I got it back from the shop today and they advise that there may be a problem with one of the carbs. I feel the problem may be connected with the installation of the electric fuel pump. If I was intending to keep the car I would try replacing with a new or rebuilt original style fuel pump. As I write this the car idles well but will cut out on fast accelleration. It is still driveable but is a point of concern until the source of the problem is found. Included with the car are the owner's and parts manuals. the radio manual, plus a rare tool roll in the trunk. I can't guarantee that every tool is the original equipment but what's there is how I found it. Mileage shown in listing is present mileage but actual total mileage is unknown. That's all the "good and bad" I can think of. Most of the Pontons you will see advertised are either junkers or high-dollar restored cars with matching high prices. Here is a chance to get a nice driver that you will be proud to own, but not afraid to get a scratch on it in the mall parking lot. e-mail me with any qustions! I will accept bids from US or Canadian bidders only! Successful bidder to pay non-refundable deposit of $500 via PayPal within 24 hours after auction ends. Balance to be paid within FIVE DAYS after auction ends via US postal money order, bank-to-bank wire transfer (preferred) or bank cashiers check. If paying by bank cashiers check I will not release car or title UNTIL THE CHECK CLEARS BOTH BUYER'S BANK AND MY BANK. This could take two weeks or more. Please do not bid if you do not accept these terms. No bids accepted from bidders with zero feedback or a poor feedback rating. These are precautions I must take due to past experience and because there are so may scammers out there. I am proud of my feedback rating and I expect others to deal honestly as well. Buyer is responsible to arrange pick-up of vehicle within 30 days of sale. Please do your homework before bidding and find out how much shipping cost will be to your location before bidding! This is important due to the recent upsurge in gas prices. Thanks for looking, I hope Ponton gets a loving home! On Apr-17-11 at 07:56:18 PDT, seller added the following information: I guess I have to repeat this: I wll not accept any bids from anyone with zero feedback or an unfavorable feedback rating.
