Vehicle Detail

Thanks for coming to check out my auction! I’ve got a 100% positive feedback rating, and you can bid with confidence on my listing. I ask that you read the entire description and view all of the photos before placing your bids (please & thank you)... Read on... You are looking at a 1984 Jeep Scrambler CJ-8 Pickup truck with a 3.3 liter (198 cubic inch) inline 6-cylinder Turbo-Diesel engine, super-rugged Borg Warner T-19 4-speed manual transmission and extra-tough Dana 44 front & rear axles. It was custom built from the frame up. The Jeep Scrambler CJ-8 was only produced between the years of 1981 and 1986. There were a grand total of 27,792 ever made, and a mere 4,130 built in 1984, so this cool little pickup is rare! It appears to have originally been cream/beige in color, but was painted a more exciting “competition orange” some years back. The older cosmetic restoration included some body-filler on the lower portions of the truck, and they’re starting to show their age now (with some separation & bubbling). Also, there is some rust forming around the fender-flares at the wheel well openings. Despite this… Mechanically, this rig is a really solid, capable machine. It‘s sitting on a 1980 International Harvester Scout Chassis & running-gear (much beefier than stock Jeep components) with a factory Turbo-Diesel inline six-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual transmission (with syncro-mesh in all 4 gears!). The engine runs super quiet & smooth, and the transmission & 4x4 transfer-case are both in good working order. Clutch throw-out bearing makes some noise when you step on the foot-pedal, but doesn’t affect anything (disengages the clutch just as it should). Clutch feels good & tight with no slippage or pressure-plate warpage/chatter. 1980 was the only year that I.H. put the Turbocharged model in their Scouts (called the SD-33T, built as a joint-venture between International and Nissan), and there were only about 6,000 Turbo-Diesel Scouts built in all, so they are quite rare in addition to the Scrambler body! These engines make 101 horsepower, and 175 lb. ft. of torque, so they’re not a real power-house, but net good fuel mileage (compared with any gas motor), and can be turned up a bit for more power and a better top speed. Right now, this Jeep tops out at about 65 miles per hour, so it’s not an Autobahn machine, but for it’s purpose… it’s fantastic! …will get between 25 & 30 miles per gallon. Of course, the top and doors come off. The previous owner put dual exhaust (stacks) up through the bed behind the cab, so if you wanted to put a full hard top on this rig to convert it into an SUV, you’d need to re-route the exhaust. They also sell aftermarket bikini-tops, as well as full-soft tops for these Scramblers, which are really nice (& cheap at only about $45.00 for a bikini top). I only have the pickup-style hardtop, and the 2 full doors, but there are a lot of component options out there for these rigs for some fun in the sun when the warm weather comes! It’s got aluminum turbine-style wheels (popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s), and very decent 33” x 12.5” x 15” All Terrain LT tires on it. It’s very capable (see video clips we took of it chewing through some deep snow and mud)! The rear axle is limited-slip (posi) for added traction, and we’ve never gotten it stuck yet! The interior is simple, but seats are very nice. The previous owner installed a bunch of aftermarket gauges (most of which work, but fuel-gauge isn’t hooked up yet), and built a homemade wooden center-console with a second heater inside. The factory heaters in these Jeeps were barely adequate, but with dual heaters, this thing will roast you out of the cab no matter the temperature! It can be completely bypassed with an under-hood valve for the warm months if you wish, and it’s separate blower only turns on when you flip the switch. There’s no air-conditioning, but who needs it when you can take the top & doors off, and flip the windshield down for total open-air driving? This is perhaps the very best aspect about a Jeep! This isn’t a perfect vehicle, but looks great from 20 feet away, and I’d say you could hop in this thing and drive anywhere in the country on a moment’s notice. It’s dependable and road worthy notice (just changed the fuel filter). Engine glow-plugs work perfectly, and it starts up without having to be plugged in down to about 10 degrees F. The CJ-8 is a bit longer wheelbase than the CJ-5 and CJ7s, so it’s not so squirrelly, and drives straight down the road (with good alignment I might add). Power brakes have an intermittent leak in the vacuum line, so sometimes you have power-assist, and other times you have to press a little harder… nothing major to fix. This thing’s not a rattle-trap when you go over bumps & R/R tracks… it feels very solid. Driver’s side rear body-mount could use some attention, but it’s the worst one of them all (see close-up pictures). Hard-to-find rust free full-framed doors with wing-vent windows were installed prior to being painted, so that’s one less thing to try & track down. Also, a full set of aggressive width fender-flares were just installed, and look really good! Glass is all fine… Headlights, taillights, brake lights & turn-signals work, but passenger front parking light is burned out. There’s an aftermarket, detachable-face am/fm CD Player mounted in the dash with small round speakers below, and 6x9”s under the seats…sounds decent. I don’t know what else to say about this truck. Predictions are that fuel prices are supposed to spike WAY up this summer, so why not drive a cool classic 4x4 that gets great fuel-mileage! I’d keep it myself, but have a bunch of other vehicles (including a Kubota diesel powered Suzuki Samurai, a multi-fuel Military Deuce & ½, diesel Jeep Cherokee, VW Jetta, Cummins 4bt powered Ford Ranger, Cummins 6bt powered crew-cab (Centurion) Bronco… etc etc. Just need to thin out the pack a little bit. This would make a great candidate to run on free/cheap used motor-oil, or vegetable-oil. Diesels are the ultimate “flex-fuel” engines! Thanks for looking, and please feel free to e-mail or call for a test-drive or any further questions. (641) 512-5229. I’ve listed this great vehicle out with a fair starting bid and no reserve, so be sure to get your bid in on it, and not miss out before the auction is over! By bidding on (or otherwise agreeing to purchase this vehicle) you acknowledge that it is being sold As Is with no warranty. I require a deposit of $250.00 within 5 days of auction’s end via PayPal, or money order. Payment in full is due within 10 days of auction’s end. I will accept bank-wire transfer, cashier’s check, or (better yet) cash-in-person. I can scan/fax a copy of the front & back of the title to the buyer prior to payment if necessary. If having this vehicle shipped, the auto-transporter I’ve had a lot of customers use is Atlas Auto Shippers (888) 285-2706. They are very competitive on price with the other transporters around the country, and Patricia can give you a quote over the phone. Of course, shop-around… but we’ve never had a single problem/issue with Atlas (for what that’s worth).
