Vehicle Detail
1984 Volvo GL Tourist & Diplomat Series - NO RESERVE! You might be asking yourself, 'what the hell is a tourist & diplomat series Volvo?' In the simplest of terms, it means someone bought this car and drove it in Sweden for a while before bringing it over to America. So, as you would expect, it's not exactly like the American model (mainly due to lack of unleaded fuel in Europe at the time). There is an accompanying letter (pictured below) from Volvo stating the differences. Anyway, I bought this car with the intention of making it a downtown daily driver for my wife and daughter (we also have a 54 Fleetwood that isn't fun to park). I personally think the 84 is the best year of the 240 - last year of the B23! ...but that doesn't really matter since my wife didn't much care for it, so I've gotten a replacement (1992 Brougham D'elegance) and this one has to go. I've owned five Volvos thus far (73 1800ES, 86 240DL, 84 242 Turbo, 89 240 and this 84 GL) - it's a habit that is hard to break. Enough about that - let's get to the car's condition. Exterior Well, the paint is definitely original - you can tell from the excellent 'patina' of the finish. Nothing like a peeling clear coat to really show off the susceptibility of the paint to the elements. In all seriousness, the pictures really speak for themselves; I've tried to take pictures of pretty much every angle. I will say that the body is incredibly straight - mainly thanks to the extra door strips in the middle of the doors (which are stuck on via adhesive only - no holes in the body). There are a couple tiny surface rust spots in the rear trunk wells (see photos), but other than that the car is rust free. The car comes with the original factory bra (see photos) - it's the only one I've ever seen for a 240. Interior Part of of the reason I bought this car was because of the interior - I love whatever this material is called. The driver's side seat foam had collapsed, so I bought new replacement foam and had it installed by Leather Menders here in Austin. The car has what I think Volvo called 'the gauge pack' option including Fuel Economy, Volts, Oil Pressure and Ambient Temperature. All gauges (including those in the main cluster) work with the exception of the Ambient Temp gauge. As with any Volvo of this era, the odometer works randomly (more often than not). The hand-crank sunroof opens and closes just fine (and does not leak) with a few clicks at the start and finish. All power windows work, but the switch for the passenger side window is a little finicky on the way up. There is a very dark tint job on the windows and it is peeling in spots. Mechanical First off, if you know these cars, you know that the engine wiring harness turns to dust. That was exactly the case with this car when I bought it - I was very surprised I made it from San Antonio to Austin with only one stall-out. I purchased a factory Volvo replacement harness and installed it along with the following: fuel injection temp sensor; airbox thermostat; idle air control valve; fuel pump relay and fuel injection relay; all rubber accessory bushings (I think there were 10); distributor carp, rotor and plugs; flame trap relocation kit; valve cover gasket and half-moon cam seal; both engine mounts and the transmission mount; center driveshaft support bearing and rubber support; rear shocks; clutch cable; Car also comes with 10 Mann oil filters, various relays, lock nobs, 200k mileage emblem, etc (see pics). The car now runs and drives well and reliably, but as with any work-in-progress, it needs a few things: rear bushings are slightly worn - you can see the slight play when the car is in the air with the axle free (slight play back and forth); overdrive wiring harness is frayed and will cause the overdrive to engage all the time - at the moment I've simply pulled the ground wire off the overdrive solenoid. The overdrive itself works well. I might have the time to fix it this week - I'll update the posting if I do. the bulb out warning light comes one when the headlights are on (though there is no bulb out) the power steering rack boots have disintegrated - new boots are included in the auction (see pics below) the passenger side door handle is broken - a new one is included (see pics below) the a/c is still R12 and doesn't cool at the moment - compressor still kicks on and you can see freon in the site glass, so it must be low (I've not had a set of gauges on it). Feel free to email me with questions. OK - enough with the text - bring on the pics!
